pacman jakks game question ?
« on: April 30, 2005, 05:26:16 am »
Hi. I was thinking of buying one of these pacman bartop machines http://extraordinaryarcade.com/arcademachines.html

I heard someone say that the jakks  pacman game was not the original arcade version. They said the music was different and the ghost weren’t as smart.  If this is true I don't want to waste my money. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks  :)

No, they're fairly accurate, but definitely not the originals. For a start they've been designed for horizontal TVs whereas the original games were played on vertical monitors.

You do know its just a $20.00 toy from Wal-Mart don't you.
They are fun and close to the real game but come on .
any one can build a cab , hack the $20.00 toy, toss in a small tv.
$100 to $150 tops
and that is using the top of the line wood, TV, and New controlls.
save your self $400.00

My brother-in-law asked me to build him a bartop for his dorm room.  Just like Dawayne said:

Ms. Pacman Controller (Wal-mart) - $20.00
3/4" MDF - $17
Happs Super Joystick - I believe Ponyboy is selling these for $6.95 each (he also has really inexpensive buttons!)
13" Tv (Daewoo - Best Buy) - $69.99

Even if you spent another $100 on artwork, etc... you'd still be right around $200 for the whole shebang and $200 is a far cry cheaper than $599.

What they said !

I decided to make a bartop for my brother from a Jakks unit after seeing BishMasterB's mini arcade.

The wiring is SOOOO easy (in case that was a concern), so all that is left is finding a cheap TV and cutting the wood (I really need to get to cutting the wood part ... I did the wiring months ago ... but it is raining today).

Really doesn't make sense to buy one at that price.

And since noone has included links for you:

These'll get you started ...

Cheers.

I bought the Namco Jakks Pacific game for my brother's birthday present last year. It's definately great fun for just plugging in to your TV and playing, however as a previouse poster said it's not 100% accurate to the original since it's designed for horizontal TVs rather than verticles.

I think this same discussion was already had:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,31213.0.html

I think Jimmy Jet put it best in his post at the bottom.  People really only take into account the cost of supplies here, not all the other costs of labor etc...  I don't think this cab will appeal to members of this forum, everyone here is here because we make our own and don't want to pay someone else to do the work for us, but I could see where this sort of thing would appeal to the average person that doesn't want to do all that stuff and would rather just pay someone to do it.

I think you obvisouly have the desire to make your own, and their cabinet doesn't look too dificult to make, you should just go for it on your own and ask your questions (if you have any) on these forums.

Also, the image quality is terrible on most of those "plug em into the TV games". The only one I have ever seen that puts out a quality picture is the Genesis one.

The worst one is the Space Invaders one. Not because of image quality, but because it doesn't have the real space invaders, it has a copy of that terrible, terrible bootleg Nes version of Space Invaders that has huge spaces inbetween each invader and the next one. I couldn't even spot what version it was at first, I just said "what is this crap?". I later found that same version on a bootleg Nes clone unit as well. Oddly enough the Space Invaders one has a darn near perfect port of some other rare Invaders era games and then a bad version of Phoenix.
