Ball-top joystick needed for CP
« on: April 29, 2005, 06:19:07 pm »
I'm thinking about making the CP for my bartop made for vintage games, but I'm a bit lost. There are so many ball-top joysticks, which one is what I want?

I need something that can mount under a 1/8" plate. I want it to be fairly high above the panel, no hitting your knuckles on the panel joys.

I also think I am going to go with a 4-way, or is that too limiting? I want to be able to play most vintage games. I am also going to be going with 3 buttons (I think I heard only a few old games used 4 buttons).

Price is also a factor (one of the bigger ones). I would go with a T-Stik Plus with a ball-top, but that would cost too much. Also, The T-Stik has shorter throw than what I want for this CP.

Thanks for the help!

How about a HAPP super in 4 way mode with a Groovy Game Gear Versa Ball. It puts the ball up a good distance from the CP.

Looks promising, but where do you get the ball-top for it? It looks like you can only get it with the default bat handle. Can the mode be changed easily by just going under the CP?

Don't buy a Super if you want a 4-way.. buy a Ms. Pac/Galaga Reunion stick.  It's the same stick, but with true 4-way action.  The GGG handles should fit it, as well.

Or, if you don't want/need the fancy GGG handles, and want to save some $$, buy one of these:

It's the Ms. Pac/Galaga Reunion stick base again, but with a red ball handle.

Can you change the Happ Supers fairly easily? If I put a hinge on my CP, could it be 4 and 8 way changeable (no need to use tools)?

Looks like I will probably get a super if they can be changed and a reunion if it can't.

While on the subject of my CP, is 3 buttons enough? Are there even any 4-way games that use more than 3?

No, you will likely need a screwdriver to get the e-clip off and possibly some needle nose pliers to get the e-clip back on after making the actuator change.
