  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Did some shopping last night to get the supplies needed for starting my cab this weekend.  I have already done a cardboard control panel and pretty much understand where everything is going to layout for the cab.

I am using lucids cab design with a CP similar to that found here http://webpages.charter.net/rbecker5/results.html but not quite as deep or wide.  When looking over the parts list I notice these 2 items.

1/2" Hex Bolts, Washers and Nuts 12 (no idea what length?)
1/2" Carriage Bolts, Washers and Nuts 8 (no idea what lenght?)

After doing some more searching I found some pics linked here where TalkingOctopus uses 4 hex bolts to secure the control and its able to be removed.

I guess my question is did anyone else use these items in construction and if so where?

I picked some up last night and those suckers are pretty big but I am still not certain where they will be used or the benefit.

I am using 3/4 mdf all the way around, and a 27inch tv with a 25 inch width.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure where that part list is coming from but if I had to guess where those parts might be used....

The carriage bolts for attaching joysticks to the control panel on a 2 player CP or perhaps the monitor shelf to supports? (1/2" carriage bolt would be too big for joystick mounting)

The hex bolts for attached four wheels to the base/bottom of the cabinet?

Its been awhile since I built my upright based on that design but I  used carriage bolts to attach my joys, hex bolts to attach wheels to the base, and also used hex bolts to attach the CP box to the cab.

I ran a couple of 2x2 strips horizontally across where the CP box sits, then drilled down through the bottom of the box, thru those stringers. Dropped in hex bolts and put wingnuts underneath.

I got the hex bolts from Home Depot. I got the carriage bolts from Happs with all my other Happ parts.

Most True Value hardware stores have this small aisle that has every single piece of arcade metal you would ever want (well mostly), it has all the right joystick and trackball bolts, it even has those little clips that go on the end of the joysticks, and a lot of other odds and ends like that.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Good point Paige.

And for those perhaps without True Value in the neighborhood, ACE stores often have similar selection.

Thanks for the input,  yea I can see the small carriage for the CP joysticks but 1/2 inch way to big for sure.

The hex for the wheels I never thought of but it certainly makes sense.

The parts list was also from the Pctopus sight linked above.

I think I do have an Ace Hardware thanks for the tip.

If not Ace try True Value, Home Despot, Lowes.....The nice thing about mass production is everyone uses the same nuts and bolts.

What I want is to pay hardware store prices for the funny pieces of angle iron that they used to hold marquees in place.
