You missed the point of what I was saying.  I have no problems with someone asking "how to do something".  What I do have a problem with is someone expecting someone else to do the work for them.  The other messages in this post had already answered how to filter, using catvers or recompiling.  When I said leg work I meant, ok you have your answer so try one of them, not continue to suggest that the MAME team should do something that you want implemented.  To some up, asking for advice=OK.  Asking for someone to do it for you=LAZY.

Ok, my bad. ::) But I've only asked for and advocated for a way to filter these Roms. I haven't demanded that someone do it for me. (others may have...)

However, if I have a suggestion for the MAME team on this (which I don't) then there's no harm in bringing up the subject, is there? If noone made suggestions, how would ANY project grow?

To sum up, I disagree with the guy who called for the MAME team to take out all adult roms, but he did make some valid reasons why they might - just not enough in MY mind to warrant it.

Let's not stifle an exchange of ideas. That would be...... dare I say it?  Censorship!  ;)

You know if you are offended by nudity that's fine, down download the ILLEGAL roms and play them.  However, censorship in any form is WRONG!!!  I find it silly that you are morally objected to having adult games in mame but obviously you have downloaded them illegally as you have never played them before.

Some people actually have different morals than you do Howard.  Not everyone thinks like you...  I know that is a surprise to you. :)  Can you answer his question without attacking him personally?

And in terms of content.... Japaneese adult games are extremely tame.  If your kid is scarred for life by a pixelated nipple or some girls underwear then I feel for you as he/she is going to need some serious consuling in the future.

There are games in mame with full nudity of more than pixelated nipples.

You don't have children do you?

Once you mature, you'll understand that pixelated nipples are a begining to searching for bigger and better things.  It can lead to pornography for some of the weaker ones.  Looking at naked magazine isn't so hard after you've seen pixelated nipples.  Looking at the porno movie isn't so hard after you've seen the magazine.

Most parents realize that kids will do what they want eventually.  But some parents believe it's their responsibility to shield their children as long as they can from what they judge to be bad influences.  (It's a free country).

What it sounds like to me is YOU enjoy these games but are ashamed to admit it and you want to have your cake and eat it to.  Either that or you are a real stick in the mud, either way get over it and don't complain about a FREE program that several people spend much of thier free time to create just so lazy bumbs like you can play pacman for free.

Stick in the mud?  We're just not as free and open loving as you?  Believe it or not, I'm not trying to be 'cool' like you.

Quote
Why am I so harsh?  Because censorship is the most evil form of manipulation in the history of this planet.  If you want to censor ANYTHING then there is something wrong with you.

Reality check. Censorship happens in every movie you watch in the theater.  They cut all the time to get their rated R or rated PG-13.

Quote
MAME isn't a kid's product, if it were then it would obviously be more user friendly and wouldn't be so illegal.  If you want to use it as a kid's product then that's your business, but don't bring you kid a playboy home and complain about all of the naked pictures. :)

Reality check.  Kids play video games.

The problem is that some adult games are in MAME.  They need to be filtered out to suit his needs.  Just answer the question rather than attacking him personally.  He didn't bring home a Playboy.

Quote
As we said catlist has a very accurate list of adult games, it's YOUR responsiblity to remove then, or better yet don't download them to begin with.

Some of us used a cd burner service and just copied all the CD's to the hard drive.  We didn't know which ones to not download.

My solution was to use MAME Content Manager http://www.mameworld.net/mcm/ and delete the adult content so my kids could play.

One final point (seems like I said that before) which I should have made earlier.

This same topic was hashed out on the www.mame.net serious msg board years ago (about the time Pong was removed and all the Mahjong games started being added).  It took about a page on the board (same as here) and there were a lot of flames shot both ways (same as here).

My point is that there is nothing to be gained by posting on the MAME board and telling them to please remove the adult games to a separate build.  Been asked before, if they were going to do it, they would have.  They are aware that some users don't want the adult games in the program.  I don't think they care.  They develop and distribute the program free of charge, I think they have a right to do what they want with it.

If someone has a constructive comment to post to the dev team, I would be willing to post it, but so far, I think CatList gets the job done and I don't see much to be gained from the earlier suggestions.

I'm not sure exactly what was meant by a "tag" to be added to MAME.  Here is how I interpret the suggestions and my thoughts on each -

Option 1 - A "Press OK to continue" screen like the current "Colors inaccurate", Bad Rom, screen.  Something along the lines of "Warning, this game contains adult content", press OK to continue" . . .

Problems - Are you going to launch 3500 games to see which ones give this warning?  Do you think your kids will see this message and say "ooh, don't want to play this one, better press escape instead of OK"  Personally, I compile to remove ALL startup screens, so I would never see it anyway.

Option 2 - MAME 32 adds a genre for adult games.  This does more harm than good IMHO, as it does not filter the games, but puts an easily accessible list of all the adult games right into the program.

Option 3 - MAME is revised so the -listinfo command generates a flag for content/genre.  This could then be used by a frontend or MAME content Manager to come up with a list of games to remove.

Advantages - The dev team could flag a game at the time the driver is being developed as having adult content.  The person writing the driver would obviously be aware of this.  This would also save TriggerFin from having to test all the games and rely on user feedback to build CatList.

Disadvantages - The dev team would have to determine what constitutes adult/non-adult content (which they could).  The dev team would have to worry about maintaining these fields, rather than just working on the games.  The same information is readily available in catver.ini and used by many frontends - this just moves the info into the main MAME build.  Also, if Catver.ini misses an adult game, you can E-mail TriggerFin and a new Catver.ini file will probably be posted within 24 hours.  If a driver developer forgot to add an entry for the new -listinfo tag, it would be the next MAME build at the earliest before it was corrected and I wouldn't count on that . . (Look how many games have known incorrect dip switch settings and they still aren't updated).

Let me know if there are suggestions that I missed!

Excellent summary, Tiger-Heli!

Although Option 1 sounds like what I suggested, Option 3 was closer to what I meant.  However, I'm starting to agree that catver.ini is indeed the appropriate place for it.

Ok, everyone has opinions and they wont change them, that's what's great about freedom! The quick solution is can someone just list the CURRENT adult games in Mame here in a post? Its like 140 games, then you just print that out and go down your list and delete those roms if you wish. Simple.

I manually edited catver.ini and came up with 180 games.  Emuloader comes up with 181, but I can't see what's missing.  (I double-checked)

A couple of ideas:

1) If you format your hard disk with NTFS, and implement a login system, and make one account for the kids, and the other for adults.    Then place the "all ages" game ROMs in a folder with both having access, and the "porn games" in a folder the adults can access, but the kid users cannot.  Then, modify MAME's ROMPath, to both folders, or use two copies of MAME, with the ROMPaths different, one for each user.

2) Use two different copies of frontends, and hide the adult one.

I wouldn't worry to much about an 8 year old breaking that kind of security but give your average 13-15 year a hint that their is porn for a reward and they'll get past it.

There are easier ways than reformatting your hard drive.  I cover this pretty extensively in the Emuloader el-tips-tricks.rtf file.

And it gets to be a moot point with 13-15 year olds.

No matter how good your security is, they are capable of finding out what games are in question, finding and downloading a clean MAME, finding or bringing home the offensive ROMS, and installing the programs (possibly in a hidden or masked directory so YOU won't find it!!!)

The best you can hope to do is making the stuff on your machine hard enough to get at that this becomes the easiest option.  Anything beyond that is overkill.
