My control panel overlay WIP
« on: April 30, 2005, 05:25:11 pm »
I've finally got a design in mind for my control panel overlay that I was pleased with enough to vectorize and color. My brother actually made the original sketch, and I scanned it and "inked" it in Adobe Illustrator and added some color. What you see is only a piece of what the final thing will have, and it hasn't been shaded yet. But I felt like showing y'all what I've gotten done so far. :)

The nice thing about using original artwork is that nobody else will have it.   ;D

Yay, I'm already done shading Ryu. :)

I've still got alot of work to do for this CPO though. I plan on having a cityscape in the backdrop and probably some kind of special effect or scene at the bottom of the CPO. But Ryu and Sub-Zero are the centerpieces of this CPO, so I'm glad to have them done. :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. :)

I've just finished drawing the cityscape backdrop. Tomarrow I'll probably start coloring it. I've been expirimenting with some cool effects that I'm planning on implimenting, so hopefully I'll have more to show tomarrow.

OK, the cityscape is now colored. My brother suggested possibly giving the buildings a bit of a blue tint. What do you think?

Hmm... Things are coming along, but I could use some opinions on what to do next. I haven't decided what to do for the bottom of the CPO. I played around with having fire at the bottom, but I didn't really like how it looked.  Also, I need to figure out what the backdrop behind the buildings will be. I'm toying with the possibility of giving Ryu and Sub Zero hips so that I don't need to worry so much about using an effect to cover up where their torsos end, but if I can find a good effect to go at the bottom I probably won't need to. Also, I'd like to possibly add some special effects, like maybe having Ryu charging up a fireball while Sub Zero charges up some ice. I dunno. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

I'd go with hips and the special effects for both of them.

If you darken the buildings, you can go with an easier (IMO) night sky.  It will make the characters stand out more.

I like where it's going so far. Personally I'm a big fan of something accenting the buttons themselves. What do you think?

I'm toying with the idea of making Ryu be charging up a fireball that appears behind the buttons and have Sub Zero be charging up an iceball behind the player 2 buttons. And, I'm also considering moving the dedicated 4-way stick to where the player 1 and 2 buttons currently are, and putting a spinner to the right of the 4-way's buttons. The start buttons would be moved to the upper left and right corners next to the administrative buttons.

Currently, I'm working on moving the project into Photoshop. I'm working with a 34" by 18" at 300 DPI to ensure I'll have a pixeless looking image when it gets printed. My main reason for the move is because Photoshop will give me more image editing control than Illustrator, and I'll have access to a larger selection of effects.

Also, yesterday I added hips to both Ryu and Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero's chainmael waist-tapestry-thingie was quite a bit of work to draw! Most of it won't even show up when the CPO is cut out and pasted on the CP, but I wanted to make sure I had plenty to work with. :P

Also, I'm planning on putting letters next to the buttons and arrows around the joysticks.

Ya, the building need some work.
Maybe darken them.
The angles of the gradients are all over the place. Should they all go at the same angle? Dunno myself.
Maybe look at some pictures of buildings and light sources.

Nice work, original.  Since when did Sub Zero start wearing a bomber?

I'm amazed you did this so quick.  Is it that easy, or are you just really good!?  I hope to beef up my pc soon so I can run a good image editing app.  Any recomendations?

If you're a student (or know one who's willing to help you out), you can get the Adobe Creative Suite from JourneyEd.com for about $380. It may seem a little pricey, but keep in mind that it contains Photoshop, Illustrator, and several other programs. I have it and I'm quite pleased with it, and it's way cheaper than just buying it from a typical vendor. Illustrator is great for drawing things or tracing them, but for image editing Photoshop is the way to go.

And to answer your question about Sub-Zero, I based my drawing off of the MK: Deception version, so that's why he looks slightly different from the "classic" version.  ;P

I guess I'm about due for a progress update. I rasterized my city image full-scale at 300 DPI, so it's the same resolution it'll be when it gets printed. I added a night sky gradient, but I haven't decided wether or not to try and put stars in somehow (that's alot more work if I decide to!). I also added an illuminated moon and put a a blue tinted filter over it.

Also, I figure'd I'd post my latest version of Ryu and Sub-Zero, now featuring legs! :)

It's shaping up... I think all it needs is some more cool effects, button labeling letters, and the directional arrows for the joysticks, and I think I'll be able to call this done. :)

Incredible work here Timstuff.  I don't know how you do this stuff.  The only suggestions I have would be to do the stuff you already thought of.  The charging up fireball and ice attack would look great behind the buttons.  Also the stars would add a lot and shouldn't be too hard to do.

Beyond that I think you should hand draw the moon like you did the rest so it matches your other art.  It just doesn't seem to fit in.

Yeah, the moon I have there right now is really more of a placeholder until I get around to drawing one. Thanks for the input though. :)

Whew! It's been a long time since my last update, but that's mostly because I haven't gotten a chance to work on this thing until today. I implimented some of the changes that I wanted to do before, hopefully it's a good improvement. Next steps will be to put in some of the special effects, and then the letters and arrows for the buttons, joysticks, etc.

Whee, special effects time! ;D

Any suggestions on how it can look better? It's pretty close to where I want it, but could probably still use some tweaking.

I recieved some comments that the energy wad looked a little blurry, so I did a little touching up to make it look more like electrical energy.

it needs to look more electrical.  the reason is that subzero is going to have blue energy too, but ice.  so you really got to make them look unique to each character and his kind of energy.

Ryu's fireball should be orangish/fire type with some electricity.Everything else looks great so far ! :)

The effect you have on ryu can easyly work for subzero.
