Crimp then solder!   


Actually, solder is ALOT stronger in the long run and will also keep corrosion from forming in the joint unlike crimping.

  Solder is definitely the best for strength and stability obviously, but it's a huge pain in the butt if you need to unwire your CP for something.  If anything, make sure you solder them to quick disconnects and not the microswitches!

Probably.

Actually, the method I would recommend is buying the appropriate length full through RS-232 M/F cable (you can get them for like $6-10 on www.pricewatch.com, click on cables and search for RS232).  Cut the cable in the middle and run one end to the CP and one end to the encoder.  No need to crimp or solder if you do this, and often it's cheaper than buying the connectors separately.

I did something similar to that and it works like a charm.

i noticed that when i cut my db25 printer cable in half, there were only ~9 wires in it. i guess on one end, they are either shared or not used.

are there db25's that actually have all 25 wires to each pin?

Yep - you want an RS-232 cable, not a printer cable and not a null modem cable.  Not a bad idea to ask the company you buy it from if it is fully populated (if they know!).

Radioshack sells db25 cables with all 25 wires.
