COM10627  -  Dell Optiplex GX50 Celeron 1Ghz./128MB/10GB (Desktop)

Processor: Intel Celeron 900 MHz

witch is it?
1 gig or a 900 mhz?
celerons are just fine. I have yet to find why every one knocks them
I can play all of Mame, burn dvds,

I've got a  Celeron in my cab currently..... no major problems to report.

Currently set up to run MAME32 v 0.62 and Arcade Jukebox 8....   ;D

It's also the machine my wife made her awesome Gyruss score on

we were talking about celeron CPU's not hard drive
personally a 10 gig is big enough for mame . unless you want to build a frankin cab.
me I am buildind 7 cabs so I can have the games I like. so a 10 gig in each is fine.
my ms pac has a 2 gig.

I'm not a big PC shopper except for watching the Sunday CC, Best Buy & OfficeMax advertisements.  I've seen their Celeron 'bundles' lately on sale for as low as $249 *after rebates*.  Yeah, a bit more than Hoagies, but 40 or 60gb HD, 2.8 Ghz, 256k ram, probably better L2 cache than that old skool optiplex.  Plus it's brand new with warranty.

10 gig HD really isn't that big.  I dunno how much space Windows 2000 pro takes up, but XP is about 3-4 gig depending on your installation.  That would leave you with maybe 6-7 gig not counting any partitioned backup.  I'd hold out for a bigger HD, more ram and faster processor for the extra $100 or so bucks (plus you get a crappy monitor and printer to boot!).   :D

I guess if you were on a tight budget that $139 refurb'd Dell could be attractive.

Most of my cabs take up less than 200M, so I would say yes.

One of these days I'm going to attempt a Windows based cab.  Then I might need a gig.

Hey, who let the vegetarian in here!   ;D

Oh, you're one of those anti-windows gamers!  I understand.  First no windows, then no meat.  What's next Peale?

Sure, if you don't count Windows, you'll save a few gig.  And yeah, a lot of the MAME roms are piddly, but you'd be limiting yourself long term.

My key word there is everything. Fortunately I can afford a cabinet but I have very little space so I can't have like 5 or 6 of them in my small apartment. I need to come as close to a everything cab as possible.

And yeah. I have to use windows, unfortunately I don't know enough to do everything i want in anything except windows. And I was talking about the Hard Drive from clicking the link.

Price isn't that hot, the local surplus place sells same thing, except an ACTUAL pentium 3, and 256 Ram for $100, and that was 6 months ago, I imagine they are cheaper/better now.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I might be in the StL area in a couple weeks.  Where is this place at?  I might pop in to see if anything jumps out at me.
Thanks

xp takes 1.4 gig
I just put it on a 2 gig hard drive
standard install. Still have 1.5 gig left
233 meg cpu
64 meg memory
mame 56 and 30 vertical roms
runs fine

I wanted to see if XP would work. YEP and even fixed all my problems I was having

This is correct, only in the sense that the more modern motherboards don't have DOS sound drivers.  You can still use an add-on card, though.  But I like being able to just screw the one board into the side of the cab.
