Jukebox - Audio choices and quality
« on: April 19, 2005, 09:25:01 pm »
Hey all, feels like ages since the last time I was on here.

Have had a project in mind for some time, so given that I may have some free time soon I am hoping to get into this one.

Essentially what I am trying to figure out is which route to take. Car speakers and amp, PC speakers or home audio speakers. Trying to figure out the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as quality of sound and price.

Jukebox will be a non-working jukebox cabinet, so that may muffle or amplify the sound in some way.

Any suggestions?

If you have the room in the cabinet, there's no excuse (IMO) to use anything other than an old home stereo and home speakers.

any suggestions for rigging it altogether.

ie. is it worthwhile buying say an audigy sound card (external or internal) and then hooking it up directly to a a home amplifer? can you take home speakers out of their enclosure and mount them or should they be left in the original enclosure that they were designed for?

I just use a soundblaster card and a "balanced" adaptor (mini to RCA's).  I have "Monster" brand adaptors, but I don't see them on their website.  I picked a few up quite awhile back at an Audio King store.

I *did* notice a difference between the Monster brand adaptor and a cheapo Radio Shack (unbalanced) adaptor.  YMMV.
