SitDown racing cab
« on: April 16, 2005, 06:51:03 pm »
I dont know if this has been discussed or not but has anyone come up with any sitdown cab designs. And if not does anyone wanna work on some. I was thinking of the old spyhunter sit down cab design http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=S&game_id=9742 streched out a bit so that a 27 inch tv could fit in there. id much rather drive while sitting down...and you wouldnt believe the lack of sitdown plans on the net. And I know theyre big an yeah yeah yeah but if we could come up with a design that broke up into pieces mabye theyred be more plans out there.

I'm actually putting the final CAD drawings together for the GameCab Racer.  Check out this link - http://www.gamecab.com/driver.htm
P.S. - I'm going to paint it up this week.

Thanks

Here are a couple more ideas.  The first is obviously a 2 seater.  I am just beginning my design after the first one.  Keep us posted with your design scheme!

i don't know about the rest of you, but if i was to build a racing cab, i'd model it after the star wars cockpit cab.  it is a bunch of small peices put together, so if you made a replica well enough, you could take it all back apart again if you wanted.

I think the largest problem with Racing Cabs is they fact that you need to make them fit through a standard house door and/or basement door.  I made the GameCab Driver at 30 Inches in width and it will not fit into the front door of my house.  To be truthfull, it's really going to be a tight sqeeze making it into the outside basement door of my house.  Once the Cabinet finally reaches my basement I will need to totaly remove the door frame and about 3 inches of sheetrock in my gameroom just to bring it to it final resting place.
Could you imagine what I would have to go through in order to bring a cockpit cabinet into the Gameroom....
In order to combat this minor problem I'm going to release the final plans with a the 30 inch and 25.5 inch designs.  I picked 30 inches because I plan on adding in some lights, gauges and a really nice Knight Rider effect.
Just use the above as words of caution to the people who like to get crazy when building (Like Me).  It's fun to make a killer cabinet but you need to check the door size first  ;D

Thanks
Charlie

i looked up the star wars sit down and it will fit through a standard door opening plus its enclosed which gives that cool feeling of game immersion.

I've a few different sit down cabs, my personal favorite from a design standpoint is a Roadblasters cab. For a one piece sitdown it's actually easy to move around, with the monitor removed you can stand it on one end and pick it up with a dolly. It's not much heavier than a upright, and being designed around a 19" monitor it's narrow enough to fit through 3' doors.

Gamecab I was looking at the cab on your site and at the end of the description you talk about an interact force feedback vest.  Do you have a link for a description of the vest?  I googled it but didn't find anything.   Thanks

Dunno about Interact, but Aura made vests like that. They also made Bass Shakers, which are a bit easier to work with as you simply screw them down and wire them up like a speaker. There was an online car stereo site that still had Bass Shakers last year, after seeing them mentioned in a thread here I picked up 4 sets for arcade projects.

I would have to agree with Tailgunner.  The bass shakers are very easy to use, just like a speaker hook up.  I would urge to get the better version the Aura Pro Bass shakers.  They can handle more power just in case you need it.  Link below for ebay auction $60 for pair.  Shipping little high.

Found the site, Parts Express still has Bass Shakers. The regular ones are $28 a pair, the pro versions are $37 each. I've used the pro versions in a few different cars, they're worth the extra $$$ there as they have to overcome the inherent vibrations of a mobile environment. In a cab I'd stick with the regular ones though, a pair of them mounted to a cab's hard seat will numb your rear end in short order.

You know... The Bass Shakers look look like a better idea that the Interact vest that I gutted.  Basically I looking for the best effect that will make the seat the seat shake like heck when playing Nascar or F1.  I would mention mamed games but they are like watching a slideshow.
FYI - As of Today I have finally finished painting my Donkey Kong Jr Cabinet (Part of a restoration I have been doing) and am going to have the GameCab Driver Painted up by Thursday.  I should have some more Pics of that Cab by Thursday night.  I really need this cabinet painted because the pictures will be included in the GameCab Driver plans.   More important is the fact that I really have a driving itch.

bass shakers...cool.  so do these take music and sound and make vibrations according to the bass?  i've never heard of them before, but maybe i'll get some for the car.  it might be cool for a driver cab, but i've only got an upright, and that might seem wierd if the cab shakes while i'm trying to move the joystick.

Pretty much, yes. Basically they're what you'd get if you took a subwoofer's voice coil, and attached it to a weight instead of a speaker cone. In a car I think you still need a mid bass speaker, but a Bass shaker can give you the deep bass you feel more than hear. The biggest plus is they only need a 25 watt per channel amp, to get the equalivent bass out of a sub you need 3 or 4 times that power for the same effect.

The only way I would put them in an upright is if there was a little platform to stand on when playing.  I bought mine from parts express too.  I am going to power them with a plate amp for a sub they also have listed for $49.  That way I can control the gain for just the shakers if I want them off or lowered.  Get the "pro" models you will kick yourself if you don't.  I actually have both sets and the pro model is built so much better.  There is a small amount of music that does come from the shakers but with any speaker you wont be able to hear it.
