I'm working on a joystick restrictor project and I have a question.  For 4-way play, how should the joystick respond when it is in a diagonal position?  For example, if the joystick is in the Top-Left position should it not activate neither top nor left switches or should the joystick always have at least one switch being activated as you move it?  In other words, should there ever be a dead zone when you move the joystick between positions?

A true 4-way should never actuate two switches at the same time......never.

The ideal situation is that one switch releases at the very instant the other closes.  But since this is nearly impossible to accomplish with mechanical switches, the smaller the deadzone, the better.
