Tron handle and buttons, but what joystick should I put underneath?

Light Cycles are hard to play with a pure 8-way.  The best (apparent) solution right now where cost isn't a factor is the 49-way with DRS mode. 

1up said Randy had a 4-way DRS mode with a very narrow acceptance for diagonals.  I don't see that as one of the options on Randy's software interface mode changer, so you might ask Randy/1up about how to set it up.

Otherwise, I don't have a good solution.  I have an original Tron stick because I couldn't find another solution I liked (prior to GP-49way which I haven't been lucky enough to use yet).

It looks like that encoder would work ($22.95+ shipping for the non-solder unit), but I'd still need a 49-way base ($33.00 for a new complate stick (http://www.groovygamegear.com).

I was also thinking of one of those sticks that you can switch between 4 & 8-way from the top of the panel.  I don't know if the T-Stick Plus ($24+ shipping http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html)would work though.  Does the stick stay "rotated" when you switch between the modes?  I think I'd have to use the Omnistick prodigy($34.95+ shipping http://www.groovygamegear.com/page12.html).  That's assuming the current shafts (or 1up's shafts) worked.  I'm just not sure what direction to head with this.

1up is working on the last step of the spider for the bottom of the 49-way in order for the 49-way base to handle the heavier traon stick.  i'm waiting till he gets this finalized, then i'm gonna get the homemade stick of his for 15 bucks, the base for 25, and some screws since someone striped mine, and they were rusty anyways.  i'm using two since i'll already have two gpwiz-49's for my dual regular 49-ways, and so i'll use my dual tron handles for tron and for tank games.  i could even make on gp 8 way and the other 4 way to play tron.

as for you and your situation, i would get your brother 1up's competition stick (still 15 bucks i think), and for yourself, get the 49-way. 

how did the artwork on your panel look when you got it?  i was thinking of scanning mine in order to dump it to the arcad artwork library.  even though it's not an arcade game, i think people might stll want it.

If you use 1up's shaft you will need to use a Super, Competition, or 49-way.

Don't forget the Ms. Pac reunion base, for 4-way action.  1UP's Super handle should fit.

The artwork is nearly perfect.  It has a small gouge in the black area about half the size of a pencil eraser.  I almost feel bad for pulling this thing apart.  Almost..

I think I'll follow Flinkly's advice.  I'll dig into it tomorrow some more.
