Bones,
Just a vote of confidence on the color. I like the old school look of the creamsicle orange. Your running commentary on the whole process is quite an entertaining read. Thanks for taking the time and I can't wait to see the finished product. I am impressed with your ability to take your time and do things right. I tend to take shortcuts and use lots of caulk and putty.  :D
Great job!

I continue to paint. Sides are now completed to my liking after...um... well I lost count, but I think it is 8 coats of orange. Front panel also completed in white which I like enough to keep.

I still have to paint the control panel box, the dashboard and some more internal tidying up before I can put my baby together.

Now that I see that orange in the light, I think there's an ass hat zit video floating around here with that same color coming out of it.

Been experimenting a little with the colours on the CP box. I have decided on good old black. I have heaps of flat black paint leftover but am I thinking a gloss black would be best here.

There is the slightest possibility that my artwork skills are not quite as sharp as Pixel's so please refrain from making more fun of my diagram than is absolutely necessary or I will be forced to hunt you all down like dogs.

Go with flat.  It'll go with the rest of your cab, since the rest doesn't appear to be gloss, and oddly enough, gloss black somehow shows shmutz, and I've noticed fingerprints on the stuff I decided to gloss black.  It was such a bother, I've gone back and repainted the gloss with semi.  Flat would probably be just fine, but if you want some gloss, just go semi.  It'll be enough to dazzle, but not too over-the-top to look out of place.

In order of increasing gloss...

flat->matte->eggshell->semi

IMHO flat would look like crap pretty quickly because you couldn't wipe anything off of it.  Matte is probably a better choice.  I just did my den in Matte and it is washable without looking it.

Maybe you should dump the CP overlay onto that picture, once you have the color of the artwork and buttons it could make a big difference to what color you decide to go with, although I think black will be best too.

Really I just want to see what it will look like finished :)

cheers

I did try this as I also wanted to see what it looks like but my Illustrator/Photoshop skills suck big hairy donkey balls. The end result was nothing short of comical and to post my attempt would destroy any remaining dignity that I am attempting to retain.

Anyone want to volunteer with the CP graphics mock-up and I won't say no to the offer....

I took about a 10 minute stab at it:

Not sure if the colors needed adjusted on the overlay or not.  I pulled them up to the point where the outer orange ring on the overlay was close to the side panel color.

Edit:  I went back and cleaned up the perspective on the screen shot and the coin reject buttons.

I really dig that orange colour.  Blue or grey have been done to death!  I had one cabinet done in that shade o' orange, and I really thought it had an 80's arcade feel to it.  I might have to get those paint codes off of you!

Today I finally finished my home made speaker grills and temporarily installed them to check for appearance.

I figure the pics are pretty self explanatory but if anybody is interested in some of the finer details let me know and I will be happy to explain.

I should also make note that all the routed edges were sanded smooth and the grill fronts were painted black before gluing on the speaker fabric, I just forgot to take pictures of these steps.....

I am on holidays at the moment and therefore expect to make reasonable progress over the next week or so.

I continue to paint. After not being happy with the flat black around the monitor & marquee area I am in the process of overcoating this with a clear coating to make it shine a little. I have applied a single coat of the shiny coating and it will need to be sanded and re-coated at least another 2 times to look any good. With a 3 hour dry time between sanding and re-coating the progress remains slow.  >:(

While waiting for more paint to dry I installed the coin door and bottom speakers and speaker grills. I have decided I am not totally happy with the speaker grill appearance and may end up knocking up another home made pair similar to the marquee ones. I think having consistency amongst the grill shapes will add to the final finish and I personally am digging the square shapes my of my home made ones.

I think it'd look cool to flank the coin door with grilles in a matching shape (with matching radii) half or 2/3's the height of the coin door so it creates a sort of paneled design across the front.

Also today I ordered the new computer which should be ready in a week or so.

As mentioned on the very first posting of this thread, I elected to go for the Ultimarc Arcade VGA card which according to everything I read should make the most of my D9200 and allow many true native arcade resolutions to be displayed.

The card was ordered and arrived last December so I have had it for some time. I briefly looked over this upon delivery but today when I unpacked it for a better and final look, I was disappointed to find just how twisted the backing plate was. I noticed this originally but didn't think much of it and then forgot about it.

I ordered over $1000 worth of parts from a local supplier and the way the packaging arrived was disturbing to say the least. The IPAC's & VGA card were wrapped in bubble wrap but pretty much just thrown in a big shabby looking box with everything piled on top. The only real packaging to speak of inside the box was the roll of t-molding which also arrived pretty bashed around and had kinks and stuff in it.

It really doesn't take much extra effort to take some pride in something as simple as packaging but alas, it was months ago and I really don't have the energy to contact the supplier again regarding another problem with the parts I ordered. (Remember the trackball......?  There were also some incorrect buttons supplied ::) )

This will not be my last project of this kind, but it will be the last order I give to the local Aus supplier.

Anyway, provided I never want to use the S-video the card should still work fine but the lack of care really does get under my skin.

I was really impressed by your marquee speaker covers. I've wanted to do something similar on mine cab for a while so it was inspiring to see you nail it.

Thanks Pixel. I think for the moment I will get this bad boy finished and after it is "finished" and playable I will re-visit the speaker grills.

I might even play with the idea of space invader alien ship grills. Might be a cool theme idea...

Can I just add that I also purchased stuff from our Australian Ultimarc Dealer and my card came in *EXACTLY* the same condition.

Not happy. I had to bend it back, and now the card wiggles around even with the screw completely tightened.

Unfortunately due to a bit of careless packing, I won't be buying from him either.

Like you, I wanted to buy local,  but when doing the maths, I could have saved $10 or so buying the parts direct from Ultimarc. Depends on the exchange rate of the day. Not to mention the stuff from ultimarc was foam wrapped, bubble wrapped and boxed.

My arcadeVGA was bubble wrapped, thrown into a larger than neccessary box with my buttons and joysticks. There was no additional packing and it rattled like a maracca when I moved it. I hate to think the abuse it must have copped while going through the Australia Post system.

Do yourself a favour, "Aussie Supplier" lift up your game a bit.

Wow, so it wasn't just me. Our boxes were probably rattling next to each other the entire 1000km's!  ::)

Thanks for the colour approval. I knew it would be met with resistance and it was a risky move but it has also really grown on me. Not exactly sure what you mean by the colour on the front dude. There is no orange on the "front" but only one orange colour was used while painting if this helps!
