Gauging Interest: Custom built LED Harnesses
« on: April 13, 2005, 09:05:41 pm »
I am contemplating purchasing all the parts needed to offer custom LED harnesses.  It would consist of standard molex connectors for a PC power supply, all the resistors, and LEDs.

I am considering providing kits with 3 Leds, 6leds, and 7 leds.  Perhaps others.

Would anyone be interested in these premade kits?

PRICES!  Should be cheap because the parts wont cost you much, unless you spend a ton on LEDs that is unnecessary.

I havent really looked into Prices on these, but like yo usaid.  It shouldnt be too much.  Besides I just want to offer the service to the public.

Also, if You have experience wiring LEDs send me a PM.

In regards to the LED controller.  When more info is available, I would be happy to put harnesses together for them.  ;)

If it hooks straight to the PS and it will light up a trackball I'd be all over it.

If you want someone to hook them up for you....Im sure I could spend some time as long as its not wiring 30000000 leds to a thin wire :P

LOL thats the service I am considering offering to the BYOAC community.  If you have supplies already and are willing to offer the same services, then by all means do such.  ;)  I know I would be in for it.  If not I will provide the services.  Just need to get a cost factor.

Anyone have a pricepoint they would be willing to pay for such a product?

Depends how the LEDs are:

If you mass buy, I wouldnt expect to pay more than a few bucks each.  You figure, connector = 50 cents or less, wire = 20 cents, LEDs = 50 cents each.  Although it may cost you less for the LEDs and more for the connectors or something, it balances.  Since there's little work involved, Id probably ballpark it at

3 LED harness = $4.00
6 LED harness = $5.50
7 LED harness = $6.00

Plus shipping of course.  When you mass buy though, the costs go much lower, so 4 bucks for a 3 LED harness would give you probably 50% profit.  If there's sufficient interest though.  Im sure if people only need one, they could make their own.  Now if there's a special header connection needed, then that could be different.  You and buddabing could work together so he needs a harness and you supply it, although that would kinda suck.

Lol.  Yeah that would suck, but if I had enough lead time what he needed, then I could possibly do some.

If the prices are that low or anywhere up to ~$15-17, I'd definately be in for 2 to 3.  Only other service like this I have seen ends up at ~25-30 bucks  >:(

Thats exactly why I think its needed.  I have contacted Gamecab and Buddabing about what would be required for the harnesses to be compatible for the upcoming LED controller.  Looks like we will soon find out heh.

So basically the harness is kind of like a string of Christmas tree lights.  Instead of plugging them into the wall, they have a 4-pin molex connector which connects to the PC's power supply.  When the computer is on, the lights are on solid.  When you turn the computer off, the LEDs go off.  If you had a 2-player control panel with 7 buttons each, you would buy two 7-LED harnesses to provide each button with one LED.  Am I following correctly? If so, I would definitely be interested.  I like the look of Knievel's NEON MAME where he lit each button with two LEDs.  Any thoughts of making harnesses that have two LEDs per button?

I am also highly interested in BuddaBing's LED controller for lighting only the buttons used in the games, so a harness for this would be great too.
