Videoconnect has upped the sale price on teh LS-30's by another $10.

Now, it's their item to sell for whatever price they want, and thats fine, but I have to think they bought this stock a while back at a set price and its just now that thier supply is running low that they want to milk it for every penny its worth.

i got lucky and found a used pair for $45 about a month ago.  A little dirty, but nothing broke on them.

no tool.  I made my own using a coat hanger, so i culd pop the tops off and clean em up.  I picked up a druins already, but havnet hooked anything up yet.

I'd say the "worth it" really comes down to how much you want to play Ikari Warriors - style games. I pretty much got mine specifically for Time Soldiers.

As for small and dinky - they are definitely compact, but I find them to be very well made, and actually like the design of the sticks, given their intended use. (8 way + rotation)

Also, I'm finishing up designing my cab (borrowing from Frosty's design) which will have a rotating CP. I don't think I'd want to use LS-30's as my primary joystick.

Hoagie got me on to these.  After he posted about these, I looked into the games they are compatible with and fell in love with IKARI WARRIOR style games.  It was my understanding that the LS-30 was the only mechanical rotary stick with a definite CLICK when your turn the handle.  HAPP makes a mechanical rotary joystick that is much cheaper, but it looks the same as all their other sticks. 

Are they worth it?  They were to me after I tried playing these games with a Joystick & mouse and then with a gamepad.  Plus, I think they look cool even if they are small.  I'll put them on an interchangeable panel, so they won't be on my machine all the time.

Luckily I also liked Time Pilot, and Twin Cobra.

The Happ mechanical rotary sticks have a nice definite CLICK, too.  It's those darn optical rotary sticks that don't.

I'm trying to get a pair of Happ Optical rotaries. So far no luck but I'm hoping that ponyboy can hook me up.

I know the opticals won't have the same feel, but as long as they work the same, that will be good enough for me.

correct me if I'm wrong, but arent they just spinners attached to a super stick?  why choose teh optical instead of the mechanical?  Do you want to use this for spinner games too?

No, they don't spin as freely as a spinner. I'm pretty sure you could not play Tempest, but you might be able to get away with Breakout.

My reason for going with the optical is that the mechanicals require the Druin board (I'm sure there is an alternative but I don't know it) and all of my attempts to find one have failed. All links referring to his site are dead and Google was no help, nor ebay.

The opticals hook up via the O-PAC, so I feel pretty confident about them. Plus I would be all set if I wanted a track ball someday.

My concern with using the optical Rotaries was that if you also had a trackball and spinner, that would be three mouse devices.

Trackball = Mouse 1 X & Y
Spinner = Mouse 2 X
Rotary Joy 1 = Mouse 3 X
Rotary Joy 2 = Mouse 3 Y

That's a lot of mice, but I guess not too bad.  You would have to use Optipac + 1 mouse hack or 3 mouse hacks.

I opted for 2 LS-30s and a Druin Interface.  I got these 3 weeks ago, so Druin is still up and running.

I don't care about a spinner so I'll probably stick with the opticals. I'll think about it I guess.
