WHY A SPINNER, JUST FOR TEMPEST? JOG MY MEMORY PLEASE!
« on: April 08, 2005, 09:52:20 pm »
WHY SHOULD I PUT A SPINNER ON MY CONTROL BOARD?
I SPENT MANY A YEARS IN ARCADES, BOWLLING ALLYES, AND CONVENIENT STORES, IN THE 80'S AND I BELIVE THAT TEMPEST WAS THE ONLY GAME I HAVE COME ACROSS THAT HAD A SPINNER. INFACT, I AM NOT SHURE IT HAD A SPINNER.        UNFORUATLY , 34 YEARS OF BAD HABITS HAVE SPENT MY MEMORY. (ACTUALLY I DIDN'T HAVE ANY BAD HABITS TIL I WAS AT LEAST 16) REGARDLESS,
ANYBODY OUT THERE THAT CAN JOG MY MEMORY OF OTHER GAMES THAT USED A SPINNER
(DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE TEMPEST)
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

Tempest is actually a good enough reason.
Tron comes to mind as a second.

For the love of everything good in this world cap locks button is your friend.

Besides tempest you have araknoid(imagine breakout),camelty is a fun maze game where you try to get a ball through a course that you spin around. How bout Tron and Discs of Tron ,bet you saw those around your area.

Those are the games that I can think of that moment and im sure there is more. The novelty and fun of having a spinner is worth every penny.Of course I like tempest alot.

Although I dissagree with the original poster's choice to TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I too am wondering what kind of killer apps exist that would make me want to buy a spinner. $80 is an aweful lot to spend on what to me seems like a glorified TV knob. I'm sure that it's great to have for games like Tempest and Tron, but those are the only Spinner-Enabled roms I've played, and I've only played those games using alternate control setups on my PC. I doubt that I'll be able to put a spinner into my first attempt because they're so freakin' expensive, but I might consider it on a future project, possibly.

Star Trek and Blasteroids.

Tempest of course

And I've spent more on a controller which is ONLY good for one game (720)... Don't regret it.

Wish I spent more on starwars controllers 4 years ago when I started looking.  At todays prices I would be rich and powerful and would control the entire scene!  "What?  you want a yoke?  Well, clean my car and make me a cocktail table!"

$64 for an www.oscarcontrols.com V2 and his mouse hack.  And even if Tempest were the ONLY spinner game, that would be reason enough for me.

Don't forget Kick. It also uses a spinner.

Impossible to play it without a spinner.

And I agree with the others, Tempest and Arkanoid are reason enough...

Wrong, caps lock is your enemy!  It's only purpose is to randomly turn on and capitalize your entire message.  Pop off the key and chuck it out the window.  Best thing I ever did.

Man! you GUYS are BRUTAL regarding THE cap LOCK button USE.

To be honest with ya, I had way too much vodka and typed the post with one eye closed.

Anyway, I love Tepest enough to add a spinner. Its just that I thought there were a bunch of games that I missed back in the 80's, because so many cabs have spinners.

ya, OK, I think I remember that game at the bowling alley in 84 (maybe)  two guys standing on multible disks, throwing a frisbee back and forth. That game was pretty cool. Yet, I found the racing pod (dont know what else to call it) one the best of the tron arcade games.( were they the same game?)  Regardless, it must of had some attraction to it becuse I do remember pumping quarters into it. Man, that was a long time ago.( 20years).SIGH! (CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY IT AGAIN.) DIDNT IT HAVE A FUNKY JOYSTICK? CANT REMEMBER.

Anyway, I have noticed that the spinners on most pre-made panels are at the top of the cp. Is it akward to reach that far?

OK Santoro, you got your Mame down, but let me ask you this-- is Gettey ( bassest of Rush) better than Flea (Cillie Peppers) or Clay pool (Primus)

This tornado of thought is probaly wrecking you like a double dose of Window Pane (Berkley 4 way ACID)

Its OK, just sit in a closet for six hours  with a flashlight and a Liter of 7UP. You will be OK. ( If you dont eat the shrooms growing in there.)

Kick originally used a trackball I believe, but a spinner works just fine since it's only right/left movement.

Other than the games, a spinner is a great way to scroll up and down your game list  :)

Also check out Kevin's review of Breakquest.  I just bought that one and i love it!

Good choice on the spinner.  You won't be dissapointed!  Relative to the value of the cab, not a big deal for the value it adds.

Ya OK, maybe I got lost in my head there. I was raised by hippies on a nudest colony in the forrest of Humbolt county -north CA. (Not kidding) But, I'm recovering fine. Infact I turned out quite Conservative.
Regardless-------

Yo, SANTORO,
you are sporting a famous quote from a RUSH song. Their bassest is thought of as the greatest bassest ever. Yet, many believe it is Flea(peppers) or Claypool(Primus).
Regardless------

276 games is a huge reason to have a spinner.
Oh, and my wife says that she wont support my spending the time and money to build unless she can play Tempest.

First she tells vids are a wast if time and she never played them.
Now she is telling me that she loves Tempest and Must be able to play it on our MAME cab. Whats up with women and video games?
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

btw, Its not REALLY 27x games... MOST of those are driving games which you can use a spinner for, but you probably wont want to.

Then you also have two main types of spinners.  Geared and weighted.  The gears are arkanoid type spinners... very pracise and easy to move from left to right.  Then you have the weighted ones (tempest) that you spin and it will keep moving in that direction until you stop it (or friction/gravity kicks in).

These games CAN be played with the wrong type of spinner... but not as well as the original.

So you will probably get 10 - 20 games that play perfect.  Then 10 - 20 games that will play close... Then you will get 100+ that you could use until you find a 360 steering wheel.

But take note.  the 10 - 20 games are all great games.

OK Santoro, you got your Mame down, but let me ask you this-- is Gettey ( bassest of Rush) better than Flea (Cillie Peppers) or Clay pool (Primus)

I'm going to have to put a vote in for Stuart Hamm (Joe Satriani's bassist, and a solo artist).
I saw him play solo live, and was absolutely mesmerized.

Unfortunately I never got a chance to see Jaco Pastorius live, but I love his recorded work.
Stanley Clarke would be another must-mention.

Kick had a 1 axis trackball, it could only spin left and right, not up or down. Spinner does the same thing.

Thanks for the correction paige. I remember playing that game A LOT when I was younger. I play it on my MAME cab with the spinner. Next time, I think I'll try the trackball and see if it plays better. I think I can disable the proper axis in mame setup... Thanks!

I can't believe noone mentioned Puzz Loop.  It's the only game I can get my fiance to respect me for playing, what with its funky beats and flashing balls in their conga line of slow approaching inevitable doom.  Also, I built a spinner for eight bucks using a hodgepodge of the guides you can find in the faq--well worth whatever time you put into it, for the games, the ladies, or whatever.

KICK/Kick-Man was one of those "first games" I played a bit too much of when I was about 12. It used a LARGE 2-way trackball. I think part of the challenge in controlling the game was the weight of the trackball. I can see it being a little too easy to play with a Tempest style spinner. And I can say it's difficult to play with a geared spinner (Arkanoid style).

Thanks (LILWOLF) for the info on the weighted and geared spinners. Playing Tempest again is my goal, so I will definitely get a weighted one.

And this is projected towards you (WILL)!

FILTHY is it...   TREE HUGGER...you say
Well let me tell you this pal. You smell like DEA. Did you work for C.A.M.P in the early 80's. I can still hear the helicopters with the infra-red in my dreams.

I use my spinner quite abit for lunar lander (thank you Star Roms!),  though it is a paddle game.

Personally, I will not have a generic emulation cabinet and NOT be able to play tempest or arkanoid.

I do use the spinner to play Super Off-Road type games.  It takes a little getting use to, a steering wheel would be better.

Ya know, I was thinking. Yea its dangerous, but hear me out.

Why not mount the spinner in the front center of the cp. AND!.... find a way to stick a steering wheel to it. When not in use, one could remove the steering wheel and use the spinner. And if spinner and steering wheel is not in use, a cap can be placed over the spinner to protect it during heavy play because it would kind of be in the middle of things.
                              HAS THIS BEEN DONE?!!!
                                     AM I TRIPPING!!!?

Steering wheels allow you to add torque which would really kill a spinner.

And steering wheels have a MUCH thicker center column.   And they are usually very cheap on ebay.

Well, not exactly, Lunar Lander had directional buttons, Start, abort, and an analog throttle for Thrust.
