Stolen from ATHD  :o

Good card for MAME and decent 3D Acceleration.

Does anyone know if these newer ATi cards can output 15khz arcade modes like the old ATi Rage cards used to?

Edit: To answer my own question, according to the AdvMame documentation, they can.

Seems pretty high to me.

I would check on ebay.  I wouldn't charge over 10 bucks for one.  Good for some things.. sucky for games.  The 8500 is really a huge leap back for gaming.  It wasn't until the 9700 came out that ATI had a good 3d card.  Good 2d card.  GREAT TV card... but not 3d card.

And for 2d and TV you can get them pretty cheap on ebay.

I got a barely-used (the guy said a month) ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb off of ebay for $40 (including $15 shipping; it was really $25).  It has DVI-out, S-Video-out, and composite-out, and is also a great video card.  I played Soldier of Fortune 2 with 8x Anisotropic filtering and 8x Anti-Aliasing at 1024 x 768 with no artifacts at full speed.  But my laptop's 9700...  ;D

First off, I'm not sure the 8500 isn't a more advanced card than the 9000 Pro, you can't just go by the number series with ATI.

Secondly, that's a fair price, IMHO, but nothing I'd jump through hoops to get.  I think I would test my luck with E-bay.

It is pretty high, when Crucial is selling refurb 128mb 9200 cards for $46.99:

I think I read somewhere that the 9000 is a better card graphically than the 9200 though.  I might be wrong.

Nope, I think the 9000 is basically a re-issued 7000, whereas the 9200 is similar to the 8500.  (Unlike the 9200se, which isn't as good), but I might be wrong - that's what I meant earlier about the numbers.

I dunno if it is the same card, but I own an 8500LE.  It has pretty decent 3d support.  It am pretty sure it was the best card on the market when i bought it a few yers ago if that is any indication.  It is not on a computer that i actually use regularly anymore but the the most recent game i tried to play on it was Unreal tournament 2003.  IIRC I was able to set it to max settings without any skipping.  I think it displayed at 45 or 50 fps tho.  I think It is probably a better idea to snoop around on newegg.com and see what type of cards they have for sale.  For a lower priced card that is still decent, I would go for a 9200 or a 9600.  The 9000 is a really crappy card.  They are way worse than the 8500.
