KeyWiz Max Problem (I Think)
« on: April 07, 2005, 04:41:05 am »
I set up my newly finished control panel tonight and wired up my Keywiz.  Everything seems to work fine, but each time I reboot my computer it goes back to the default button assignment and I have to launch the Keywiz program.  This is a huge annoyance and I am wondering if there is any way around this.  I didn't see any jumpers like on Ipacs to set and am kind of angry at myself for buying this instead of another Ipac.

If it helps, I tried remapping the default (A) to new scheme, but it still goes back to the factory settings.  :(

That's not a KeyWiz Max problem.  The KeyWiz uses SDRAM rather than EEPROM, and so does not save it's settings on power-down.  You don't have to run the KeyWiz Program manually, though.

I don't have the software in front of me as I always use the default settings (or program it from a batch file), but try this:

Open Windows Explorer (File Manager, etc.), and navigate to C:\KeyWiz.  Right Click on KeyWiz Uploader.exe and select Create Shortcut.  A new (small) file will appear named "Shortcut to KeyWiz Uploader.exe".  Right click on this and select Properties.  On the Target line, type the following (with the quotes, I think):  "c:\keywiz\keywiz_uploader.exe /A".  If this works, when you double click the shortcut, the KeyWiz software will load the codeset that was last in use.

Now drag this shortcut to the taskbar "Start - Programs - Startup" group so that the shortcut will launch automatically on startup.

Alternate method - Find C:\Autoexec.bat, right-click and select EDIT.  At the begininng of the file, enter a new line and type "c:\keywiz\keywiz_uploader.exe /A" (without the quotes).  Save the file.

Either way, your KeyWiz should now start with the same codeset it was using when you powered down the PC.

If this doesn't work, post back with what you tried and what is happening, as I might have missed some steps, (but I don't think so).

Please read the documentation for the software, paying particular attention to the "Virtual EEPROM" section.  TH basically explained it already (but the autoexec thing won't do it for you unless you use the DOS software, which I don't recommend unless you are running pure DOS.)

When you are set up to use the Virtual EEPROM capabilities, it requires no user interaction and is no different than loading a "driver", as with any other hardware and only required if you aren't using the default MAME compatible codeset.

Let me know if you have any difficulties setting it up.  That's what I'm there for.

Thanks for the excellent help.  I must have been tired and overlooked the command line information provided.  I got it working now!
