LF: Control Panel Overlay suggestions
« on: November 18, 2002, 06:30:59 am »
I'm almost done with my cab, I need some input from you guys...

Here's the cab first of all... www.animeka.net/arcade/ga05.jpg

That's a metal control panel you see. I want to cover it with something nice, ideally, without adding plexiglass on top of it. Any suggestions, ideas, places to go to online, etc? Basically, I want a generic overlay I was thinking something like the generic capcom overlay that looked like metal, or something like that.

thanks for your input!

A friend of mine has a company in Syracuse N.Y. that specializes in arcade equipment.  He has IN STOCK all kinds of solid colors, panels, of that heavy duty adhesive backed vinyl that you see on almost all arcade control panels.

EXTREMELY easy to use.  Just peel the backing off, and press on.  Looks professional and is very rugged.  Its about $20.00 per sheet.

I'll post the source in a few hours once I get to work.

I would still say go with metal looky capcom overlay. Those overlays last like forever and the adhesive stays on and everything.
EBAY! ;)

Yeah that's how I feel too, but e-bay is not a reliable source when you want it NOW :)

I found that one too, and that's the only place I found. Not interested in paying to "import" them from australia... ;) Looking at either US or CDN distributors...

Thanks :)

If you want Canadian have you tried Starburst in Toronto? They're Canada's largest Happs distributor and they carry factory replacements as well. I haven't run into anything they DON'T carry yet.

Brax, have you ever been to any of Starbursts auctions?  I was at the last one, there was a lot of good games going for some pretty good prices.

I did and they don't carry overlays... This is a lost cause I guess.. I'm going to get my CPs powdercoated and I'll put some vinyl labels on it to "decorate"...

Thanks guys!

I was actually at the last one too. I helped my buddy build a two player desktop controller and we bought the parts after the auction.

It was kinda funny.... I was looking at some of the more beat up cabinets wondering if they'd go for a deal. I saw one... was it a SF2? I forget exactly, but it had MASSIVE cigarette burns on the buttons, the plexiglass overlay had blue paint on it that was half chipped off... it looked hideous! I thought for sure it would go relatively cheap... it went for $1200 bucks!! Man, was I wrong! heh I was thinking like someone that wants to put it in their home, not like an operator. It had a popular game in it and it would make money. They don't care what it looks like!   :P

I missed some of the prices.. I think that Space Invaders went for 400 bucks or so.. I would have like to see what that Hit the Ice cabinet with the board problems went for.. my friend loved that game it woulda made a good cabinet for him.  8)

Hmmm, what about that carbon fibre sticker stuff? That's close to that metal look... I've seen that stuff in Canadian Tire before. (not sure how durable it is but if you powder coated the control panel first you could always peel it if it wasnt durable...)

The links he's got posted for the carbon fiber stuff claim it can last 3 years outside in the elements. Even if its not as good as they claim it is, it should last a good long time inside. Most of us don't have outdoor arcades, though I do have this nice spot out by the hot tub that would be just right for a arcade cabinet.
