Ball top replacements for Happs 49-way sticks?
« on: April 01, 2005, 01:49:26 pm »
Are there any ball-top replacement stick options for the Happ 49-way joysticks?

Thanks!

Groovy Game Gear and Slik-Stik are both working on it.

I'm not sure.
I thought they were working on a Happ's model because they are still commercially available.

damn...your right.

i guess i'll be sticking to groovy game gear sticks.  no offense to randy, but i was hoping that i could keep my sticks common to slikstik, since i already have some for my p360's.

I don't think either SlikStik or GGG are making handles for the Williams49.  Tom at Specialty Plastics does.

So did you get the Williams sticks from that Arch Rivals auction?

I'm going ream my machinist a new one (ummm...not literally)

I have a proto on my cab that works great...problem is, it took 2 weeks for that one and then I find out that the Happ version is different than the Midway version as stick dimensions go.

So, I re-designed the thing and am currently waiting (3rd week now) for the sample.

They are coming, but at the moment, only for the Happ version of the sticks.  I'll consider the Midway later, but quantities are the key when producing something like this and I don't know the demand for the Midway variety.

Randy,
Are the midway versions different in diameter or length? I don't have a Happ version to compare to but I was thinking it was diameter. If it's length, then the one size may still work. The Midway versions stick out about a 1/2" longer than they need to be. I actually had to adjust mine by cutting the bottom bushing and using the little piece I cut off to raise the stick in the base.

nope, no-go on the ball replacement.  the slikstik shafts are an eighth larger than the williams.  i'll talk to tom about the choices of colors or materials, but i don't have high hopes.  as for slikstik, the do everything with a cnc machine, so they would onl be interested in large runs. maybe i'll poll the community...

Maybe the GGG balls could be fit to Tom's shafts, then.

I could swear my new happs 49 sticks are labels midway on the top of the plastic.

Are there 2 different style of midways?

Word is that the handles on the old ones that were actually made by Midway are a little bit different than the ones Happ makes sells today.

I can also conform this..... the new HAPPS 49ways I just got last week do indeed say midway on the top of the joystick base.  But I do not know if the stick is in any way different etc cause I have nothing to compare it to.

Here's the current story:

I got a demo in the other day.  Turns out that the narrow end is really hard to machine because it is so long.  The machinist does his best.  The tolerances were ok, but the surface quality could have been better on the lower part.

I tried it out without it connected to anything and the fit seemed pretty good.  It was when I connected it that I saw it was too loose.  A little slop at the grommet translates to a lot of movement at the sensors because they are so far away from the fulcrum.  It was registering a movement when it shouldn't have because of this.

So the tolerances need to be tightened up, and I need to give him another drawing.  Just haven't had the time due to all the other things going on at the moment.

Still trying.....
