LS-30s as normal 8-ways?
« on: March 30, 2005, 03:42:56 pm »
How do the LS-30s work as a normal 8-way?  Are they useable, annoying, or what?

I'm perfectly happy with the set i got--you might get the occasional rotation click if your in some super action but other than the handle shape--you wouldn't know the difference
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

You can use them.. but you wont really want to.  They will suck for many games and put extra ware/tear on very expensive joysticks.

get yourself a happs super for 7 bucks and you will use it 98% of the time and be happy.  I have both... and if I could only have one... I would go with the supers.

I think they would be find for a second joystick for robotron ect.  But for player 1 joystick one... get a standard joystick.  You WILL be using it a TON more for normal games.

The Wico type rotaries are a lot more usable as a normal 8-way than the standard LS30. They have a circular top instead of that octagon, and they have the classic Wico grommet.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Hmmm okay..

I have a couple Happs supers/competitions on my CP now, and I'm looking to replace 2 of them with rotaries.  Personally, I will be mostly playing non-rotary games and the rotary games that are playable wouldn't offer anything nostalgic for me, so I'm not bent on spending that kind of loot on a couple LS-30s.

I looked for a picture of the Wico rotary joystick but couldn't find one that specifically said it  was a Wico stick.  Are they the same as the DataEast ones with the round (vs. hex) top?

I'm even considering getting a 49-way with RandyTs new spiffy interface there, so now I'm curious if there's a way to get any 49-way joystick out there (Midway, Happs, etc) to work with this hack?

What do you think?  Am I wasting my time?

You should really look at either a moduler or a hotswap solution.

That hack was REALLY cool.. but required a very special mouse... And I'm guessing that it will need touch ups often...

But if you want a rotary + 8way consider going for a happs rotary (either optical or clicky)...

If you really looking for a 49way that works well in as a rotary also I think you might have too much stuff below it.

With a hot swap control panel (or moduler) you can just add something new when you find a deal on each controller type.

But of everything youve mentioned.  I would go with the 49 way + adapter.  I hear they are GREAT for 8way, 4way, 49way, analogish... Good all around solution for someone who doesn't want a bunch of controls on their cab (or a bunch of control panels sitting next to it).... just no rotary..

2600 had a set of wico rotaries he was going to sell me.  I decided to get some LS-30's though.  Ask him if he still wants to sell em.
