I posted this info at the end of that 11-page thread for the GP-Wiz49, but thought it merited it's own posting for the folks that gave up half way through....

There are a few games out there that don't support gamepad controls.  These are mostly not showstoppers, but there was one glaring exception...Visual Pinball!

Well, I checked out JoytoKey, which is an otherwise nice piece of software, but it wouldn't work for VP and it had an annoying way of not allowing a screensaver to execute (i.e activity was always sensed, so it never started.)  So,  good for some things, but not for others.

Thinking that JoytoKey was the best thing available, I went to the VP forums.  Turns out that the author threw gamepad support into the Alpha of the next version.  It's not a simple "plug and go" situation as of yet, but it is working and there is much hoopla surrounding it.

But until it is "plug and go", there's RB-Joy v8.0

This is an awesome utility that is far more powerful than JoytoKey and I'm surprised I haven't seen it mentioned.  It was written by a interesting 43 year old German gentleman named Ralf Biedermann.  It has a little difficulty with shift keys, but if you remap them to something a little more normal it works great with VP, as well as others that JoytoKey couldn't handle..  It can send single or multuple characters, launch programs, and more all with joypad based controls. You can also set up multiple control profiles and select from a list at the icon in the system tray.  Did I mention that it also had built in shift capability for every button on the interface?  (except the shift button, of course  :)  )

If you have a GP-Wiz,  GP-Wiz49, or other USB gamepad based control, you want this program!

BTW, for those that can't read the German on his website, it's free, but he would like a small donation made to an animal protection charity if you use it a lot.

Nice find!  BTW, here's a link to set-up info for it:
