Betson Trackball question
« on: March 25, 2005, 04:04:31 pm »
The cab that I have going right now is my first attempt so forgive any stupid mistakes I've made. Basically, I build a CP and bought a HotrodSE. I took the buttons, joysticks and PCB out and mounted them in the CP. The reason for this was I wanted a trackball and the Hotrod has no room for one. So, I bought a Betson Imperial trackball with PS2 connector and was all excited to play some great games. Loaded up Golden Tee and.....no go. I'm using the latest version of MAME32 and my question is thus; what changes do I have to make to be able to play Golden Tee with my mouse trackball or can I at all? God I hope I didn't waste a bunch of money on useless parts...then again, I can always build another cab with left over goods. haha

The idiot mame devs have mouse input turned off by default, you have to turn it on in your mame32 options, it is on the tab under controllers. They conviently have joysticks disabled there by default as well.

Thanks, whew I was really hoping that it was going to be something really easy like that. I'll check that out when I get home from work tonight.

I know you don't like it, but there're good reasons why it's like this.

The biggest reason (now) is because the last time joys and mice were enabled by default (~0.85), mame.net forum was totally flooded with questions answered with a version of "disable mice/joystick".  Far beyond the normal FAQ level.

Apparently that wasn't the first time, either.  Twice shot, twice shy.

Besides getting the "mouse/joy don't work" FAQ here (that would just be replaced with different FAQs anyway, see reason above), what's the problem with a default different that what you use?  Just keep the same mame.ini file between versions, and you won't have to edit it.

Is there anyway to adjust the trackball.  I have a hard time moving around. In WindowsXP, it just is fine and moves quite fast.   In MAME, it is slow. Requires more movement.   I switched to joystick for a game and noticed that the joystick moves at the correct speed so I am not sure where the problem lies in.

What possible problems exist because mouse or joystick input are ON? If there are problems there then they need to be fixed.

But which problem is more common "Mouse doesn't work" or "Mouse working causes problem". I'll bet it is the former and not the latter,

In the game option after youve launched game you should see an analog control option and should be able to raise or lower the sensitivity.....

Generally you have to adjust the analog settings for EVERY game, the defaults tend to be whatever worked best with whatever controller the person who last worked on that driver used. Which probably isn't the same one you have.

Also, get the upgraded Betson encoder wheels from groovygamegear.com, it is well worth the few bucks they cost, it makes the Betson ball go from a "decent" one to an "excellent" one.
