What's Jungle Hunt worth? MAME it?
« on: March 25, 2005, 08:20:51 am »
I know a guy with an original Jungle Hunt Taito cab he wants to sell....its normal wear, scratches and nicks here and there, but not too bad. Needs a new CPO.

He has owned it 10 years, and rarely used it. He hadn't turned it on in a while, and when he did do it one day it stopped working. It doesn't power up. So, should I take this cab, and what do you think it's value is, or what I should pay for it?

It might just be some soldering work or power supply. Who knows. If it's really screwed I could do a MAME conversion, preserving the cab as is, and have fun with it.

Comments please.

It's an older generic cab, but if it's complete and in real good shape... I'd fix it.

They aren't terribly valuable.  Not working and in that condition, I'd say probably $100-200.  They usually sell for about $300 in okay condition.  I'd say probably $500 tops for a pristine one.

Since it is likely a small fix, I would try to fix it rather than Mame it.

If you don't want it, post the info here so someone local can snag it.  Don't MAME it, MAME is for Dynamos and beaten up cabs, not for undoing a complete and original cab.

you should really be offering 200 for the joust machine right next to it...

Mame or not to mame isn't really the issue.  Its if you can swap it back easily without damage.

I don't remember if its jamma or not... but get a jpac + arcadeVGA and its mamed without any damage.  If you want to add extra buttons... make a new control panel with extra buttons.

Worse come to worse... you need to buy / make a jamma harness for the existing board

Its SO easy to build up a nice mame machine without doing ANY damage to the original.   I would have done it in a SECOND if it was available when I started my mame cabinet.

I would replace the overlay, rewire the machine as jamma, repair the board and monitor if needed and then put the original board back in with an adaptor.

That way it is still a dedicated Jungle King, but you can stick other boards in there if you get tired of Jungle King.

I'd keep the sideart as is.... I have that exact same taito cabinet but the last guy to convert it painted the whole thing over in black. :'( I've scratched the paint off near one of the corners and you can see still see the green... I wish my cab looked like that, though  ;D

There was a Jungle King at the KC superauction... I wanted it and bid it up to $95, but someone wanted it more. I would want to leave it dedicated. Maybe you could buy it, fix it, and sell for a profit, thus allowing the purchase of a converted 25" cab with jamma components. Or something like that.

Oh, and where was this thing located ??? ;)

That is way to nice to mame it.Please consider restoring it if you do buy it.If you do mame it ,please consider keeping it original and maybe just playing classic games on it.

And if a Mame cabinet is what you really want and you live ANYWHERE that they have auctions then simply get the Jungle King and haul it up to the auction the day before when all the vendors are lined up waiting to put their games in the auction.

Then just start talking to the guys waiting to unload their games, you can almost certainly trade it to one of them for a fighter cabinet right then and there.

That also goes for conversion games, you can usually strike up some decent deals in the parking lot, as most of the sellers would rather just get a $100 bill right then and there for their 19" conversion game and not have to put it in the auction and end up with $80 after fees.

Oh, of course I would keep it original if I were to mame it. I would never paint over the side art or hack the cabinet and put a friggin frankenpanel on there. I would remove the CP, make my own, get arcade vga and so on. and that's only if i can't get the game working first.

UPDATE:

I am buying the Jungle Hunt. I am going to try and get it working. If it does, I'll get a new CP or print one out from AAL. Also, the sideart needs a lot of touching up. Anyone have tips for this? I think I saw that someone had the paint codes for the Taito cabs somewhere.

I don't know how good this is, cuz i've never tried it, but Home Depot has a machine that will electronically match a color. You could bring in a couple paint chips and do that. (But like I said, i don't know how accurate the matching is)

The paint-matching machines will give the salesman a good start.  There still need to be manual tweaks for a really good match.  If you are going this route, best to go to a good paint store and have them match it there--worth the few extra dollars (over a Home Depot or Lowes).

actually it's not just a generic taito cab. sure most of their graphics were of the same style but most games had there own color scheme. ie. qix is grey/black, jungle hunt/king is that yellow/green color. i think there might be a cople overlaps, but for the most part each game has it's own cabinet.

i'm with the majority here, it would be a shame to mame that cab, it's decicated, complete, and most likely an easy fix. while the game isn't super rare or anything, it's not dirt common either. empty conversion cabs are so easy to find.

if your heart is set on mame or get to the point where you don't want to bother with it, post your location and you will be able to find someone to trade for the cab pretty easily.

as for the problem, the first thing to try is a new power supply. taito linear psu's are notoriously bad. arcadeshop.com has a kit that will allow you to replace the old one without cutting a single wire.a very easy install.

No worries. As I said, I am going to try and fix it. Only if it turns out to be something that can't be fixed fairly easily would I consider mameing it. And even then I'd do it so it's reversable. I am going to leave the art alone, leave the bezel and marquee, etc.

So, once I get this puppy home I am going to be asking for help troubleshooting the problem! The guy said a fuse looked burnt out, and the area all around it looked burnt as well. He replaced the fuse, but it still didn't power on.

I still vote for replacing the overlay and rewiring it as JAMMA, you can get a JAMMA adaptor for the Jungle King board and then you can play all sorts of games in it, and then when it comes time to sell it will STILL be a Jungle King, and it will actually be worth MORE because of the updated wiring and power supply.
