Best Buy 19" flat CRT $35 AR BM Only YMMV

Would this make a good monitor for a MAME? Unforunately they don't have any in my area, but maybe someone can use it

Best Buy
It's not advertised, and you can't find it online (so no link), but if you check in the store look for a mag innovision 19" flat crt (18" viewable) model 972pf-s.
SKU 4726577
Rebate printed out at the store on the 3/19, and the rebate says it's good from 2/06/2005 to 4/23/2005

$80 + tax - $50 rebate = $35

Don't see why not as long as its svga. Unless you're sticking it in a cocktail. I've tried both a flat tube and standard curved jobbie in a cocktail and found the curved one to look closer to a proper arcade monitor due to the shape.

The curved is the case for all types of cabinets (other then showcase).  I believe every arcade ever produced was curved.  The biggest problem (other then not being authentic) is that you will probalby have problems finding a monitor bezel to fit around it.

As for the as long as its svga comment...  You will find that the farthest you can get away from svga the better.  Original arcade monitors where 320x240 and similar resolutions.  They look worse the highter the resolutions...

The best case (imho) is arcade CRT (new for $200 shipped available and used can get down to 25-50 often) + an arcadeVGA card (90 and very hard to find second hand).  Next is a good TV with a good TV out (svid+ quality)... Next I would go with B-grade VGA (low resolution industrial monitors)... Next SVGA...  IE bottom of the list.

But after that... $35 bucks for a monitor solution might be just perfect for you.    Its also the easiest to configure and really looks GREAT for vector games (the only time I believe everything I said above is backwards)

Good luck

This may be true if you are only interested in arcade games and hung up on "Authenticity".

I use my cab for more than just arcade games, (Video editing and DVD authoring for example) and most of my favorite arcade games were vector games, so I will be checking my local Best Buy tonight.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

For some reason I assumed this was a TV, but I just googled that model #, and it's a PC monitor, not a TV, so it's definately not S-video or Composite, just a plain old 19" VGA monitor.  If you go looking for one, make sure you're in the right part of the store!

BTW, a 19" PC monitor is not as big as a 19" arcade monitor.  19" arcade monitors have a screen about the same size as 21" PC monitors.

My local Best Buy did not have this rebate.  I had them check all of the Best Buys in the state and none of them had it either.  Plus it wasn't even in stock anywhere in the state.  Just an FYI here in Michigan.

I registered here to say thanks for the info. If I can get this deal where I live (north FL), I'm snatching two for my Vs. Cab project. Thanks.
I want an Easter Egg.

welcome... if you haven't gotten in on this yet, you probably won't be able to. it was reported on a "deal" board and people snatched them pretty quickly
