Tron restrictors???
« on: March 20, 2005, 05:16:17 am »
I just got my xenophobe joy stick in the mail.
I flipped it over and compaired it to my tron stick.
yep . there differant.
so are the top restrictors.

I think I can get the bottom restrictors machined at work. they would be blue instead of red.
any one interested in this.

Yeah, I think anyone with a Xenophobe Joy would be interested.  Also, I think  people with a Tron joystick might be interested as well to replace their worn out ones.

If the price is right.  ;D

any one interested in this.  I have not asked the friends at work yet. I just thought of it sitting here. I am sure I can get this done. we have the tools and the material.

I think I would leave out the screw hole so they could be matched to your base.

Hey, you got a Xenophobe joy?  cool     ;D

I for one would be interested.  Anything would be cheaper than trying to get a Tron joy.

I'm gonna have to second coasternuts, those of us with Tron jpysticks would definitely be interested in a new restrictor plate.  I'd definitely one at least 2.

If you make them out of the same material that Midway did, you will also need the often missing plastic sleeve for the bottom of the stick.
Those going missing, or wearing out, cause the metal stick to really shred the restrictor itself.

For those who are unsure about this, the stick WILL work with only the bottom restrictor replaced.
I've got one doing exactly that for a second handle on tank games.
My only concern at this point is the long term durability of the bottom restrictor if it is doing all the work.

Normally, the TOP restrictor does most of the work.
(I would guess about 80 percent, or so).
The bottom restrictor just guides the bottom of the stick.

And I'd be interested in a couple, if the price is not prohibitive.

 Hiya,

I might be in for 2 sets.   Anyone post a pic of thier sticks here?  I need to make sure mine are the correct ones.

Also, I see that my top restrictor uses a hard translucent rubber like material.   My guess is that keeps the thing from breaking from a hard bash...and reduces wear from constant friction.

Will these be made of the same material?

What do you expect the costs to be?

If you do not put a hole there... it might be very hard to center propperly.   Maybe you could put a small indent pilot dimple where the hole would be.  In fact, maybe 2 sets of dimples.  One for the tron fit, and one for the xenophobe fit.

Can someone post pics of the tron and zenophobe sticks?  I've only seen the handles.

I think this might just be a big seller!  You would sell a ton if you could fit them to a super...then you could sell hollow shafts...then handles...  We might actually be able to have wallet friendly Tron sticks.  :D

If you want - there have been many mini tron sticks on ebay.  These were used in the cocktail versions of the game.   Probably very affordable.

Playing Tron with a mini stick is somehow unimaginable tho.   You really have to have played the original controller to understand the feel to know what youd be missing by trying alternative sticks.

The Tron restrictor is at work , but you can see it is diamond shaped from the above pic.
this one is the xenophobes. much larger ID and rotated 45 degrees.
we could tell my Tron restrictor ( would some one tell me how to spell it) has seen better days. ( I did not know this, Trons were made to thin) we are adding close to .222 mill to compensate for wear.
the second pic shows what we plan to do. In large the footprint of the restrictor. no insert to go into the slot of the shaft. (more universal for other type joysticks) We only have my two to go from. No telling what others are like.
The restrictor can be no thicker than 3 mill meter thick or the ball will rub.
The diamond cut will be smaller than I have marked. It will be exact size as my tron Joystick. ( + .222 mill meters )
we plan on using clear Lexine. My stock is to thick almost 6 mill meters. I could mill it down but I still want to keep it clear so the user can just mark the screw holes and drill where needed. (Lexine is very simple to drill. It will not shatter like Plexiglas.) ( for the ones of you that have xenophobes or trons just let me know . I will predrill for you.
( well... that pic of the restrictor stinks. let me try again)

Well, it looks like my sticks are the tron type - but the restrictors are facing the wrong way.   It I mounted them different, it should be ok  but - that still leave the top part a problem.

Can someone post a tron stick pic of the top restrictor please?
Id like to see the shape and way its mounted in comparison.

Also, are there plans to repo the top restrictor as well?

Put me down for one.

I've posted another pic of my Tron stick, top & bottom.  The top restrictor is REALLY HARD.  When brand new, was this restrictor that hard or did it have more give?  Right now hitting diagonals in the MCP cone level and spiders level is difficult (although right angles in light cycle phase are easy).  Any chance of getting top restrictor replacements?

I do not know. never thought about it.
lets see how this one goes first. ( the bottom )
It might be to thick. I have to track down some longer bolts.
I marked the base of xenophobe and the new clear restrict or. lined up the cross, and marked the holes. the keeper locking ring did fit. Tight fit.
I have to still drill it. find a set of longer bolts. hack a playstation or side winder,
build a temp stand and try it out. I hope to get most of this done this 3 day weekend. Wife has other plans.
format her Dads hard drive and set him all back up again  :(
get the spare bed out of the arcade room.
get the 3 arcades off the porch
Honey Do List.  :P

 Hey coasternuts & markrvp,

Thanks bunches for the pics.  Clears up a lot.   The manual was a poor scan, so couldnt what was going on.

Just a side note for anyone taking parts pics... if you take a pic of a part with a ruler in it - make sure the ruler is lined up and 'on top' of the object rather than beside it.
As you can see from the pics - that perspective throws you off - so its hard to tell exactly how thick the restrictor is.

 Thanks again tho : )

It seems I was worried Id have to try to mount the bracket at an angle... but that would really suck.   Now that I see that only the restrictor needs changing,  it really makes it an easier solution.

Im pretty sure that my tron top restrictor is doing all the restriction right now.   Im not sure if that is because the botton has worn out a bit of not. If might be because the bottom only gets used if the rubber top is compressed really hard.   But maybe its just all worn and out of whack.   Havnt tested it yet either.

Not sure how flexible the top is supposed to be... but i do know that typically its supposed to be a little hard to hit diags.  Too much flex would wear fast and make it too easy to mess up in 4way mode.

If you are having some troubles - check and adjust the leafs too.  Sometimes that can be an issue as well... as they need good cleaning and also get bent outwards after a while.

Hope a repo is in order.

 Thanks : )

There is a metal collar around the Tron sticks that actually rolls around the stick as the stick contacts the upper restrictor, to prevent wear on the upper restrictor.

I'm not sure if the plastic sleeve on the shaft's bottom was used originally on Tron, but they used them on Xenophobe to prevent wear on the bottom restrictor.

If you make them out of the same material that Midway did, you will also need the often missing plastic sleeve for the bottom of the stick.
Those going missing, or wearing out, cause the metal stick to really shred the restrict or itself.
I believe you are correct.
I did not know those sleeves were missing on some stick out there.
I lucked out, I bought my tron stick and Xenophobe stick off of people here at B.Y.O.A.C.
both are in fair to very good shape, and have all pieces to them
Both at prices better than EBay

here is what it looks like. I would have posted these yesterday . I did not think it would show up.
I only found out it shows by mistake.
I was showing poneyboy his grips fit the tron stick and I saw the xenophobe sitting there

What the heck is that second picture?
Does that piece fit on the bottom of the joy above the leaf switches?

I noticed my restrictor was a little worn and I definately don't have any plastic piece like that.

I think that's the prototype of the bottom restrictor he's making.  He is making it out of clear Lexan instead of red plastic.

guess what.
Ms Pacman restrictor is the same as trons.
yep . I Have 2 old style Ms pacmans joysticks. both have the same restrictor as trons. bolts right in as is. Both the restrictors are in much better shape than my old Trons was. ( off the top of my head I would say its because Ms Pac has a short stick VS Trons long pull.
so If any of you have a spare old style ms pac there is a instant fix.
