Do I need 2 cabinets
« on: March 18, 2005, 12:18:50 pm »
Just been surfing ebay fir jamma pcb's, and saw some displayed sideways on the monitor,
ie highscore etc on the left hand side rather than the top.

If I have a none rotatable monitor, I will need a new cab for verticle games.

As my current one is mounted horizontal.

I dont want to build a mame system yet, that will be project 3

Or am I missing something, all the search finds is how mame rotates or other emu front ends

thanks

...unless you want them full screen

i really really REALLY like vertical games and was planning to construct a cab with rotatable monitor (like krawdaddy's GOLD MINE) but now I am leaning toward having two separate cabinets instead

advantages are that more people can play games at the same time and i won't have to deal with degaussing problems as much

disadvantages are less floor space and more $$$

More machines are USUALLY better--at least until you end up like Paige did.

When you reach the point where you have a Gorf in the bathtub, are serving dinner parties on a line of cocktails, can't cook dinner because the bartop's on the stove, have to sit in your Night Driver cab to watch TV because you sold the couch to make room for the cab, etc... you MAY have a few too many cabs.

well, your talkig about actual arcade pcb's, right?  if your making a cab to run actual arcade pcb's like they were supposed to, then you will need two cabs to run vertical and horizontal games.  on top of that, you'll need alot of different controls panels...if i'm right in assuming your trying to run alot of pcb's in one cab.

I think 2 is enough 1 for mame and another for real games (pcbs) , but if another good cab comes along i would have to get it.

Expanding on NoOne's list:  Top ten signs you have too many cabinets:

10. You had them shut off the gas, heating your home will no longer be a problem.
9. You are forced to use the microwave for everything instead of the stovetop, because that

The benefit of 2 is different controls as well.
I like smaller cabinets, so Im limited in space.

I just bought a mini (cabaret) which will be my vertical cab with 4-way joy and a spinner.

Maybe it's not too many cabs after all.
I could just be that you need a bigger house.

And I did what's in your avatar once...during a really boring high school biology class lecture.
I used the copper piece off a wooden ruler to do it though.
Made a real pretty blue arc, and a somewhat incriminating cloud of smoke though.

The teacher looked up, asked if everything was "alright over there", and then continued his lecture.

So if I plug a vert jamma board into my cab it will display correct orientation but not full screen.

No.. it will be full screen but be on its side.

The previous poster was assuming you were using MAME. Mame can rotate a vertical to fit a horizontal screen with black bars on the left and right (sorta like watching a 4:3 TV show on a 16:9 wide screen TV without stretching the image)

Actual arcade boards have no ability to rotate as far as I have seen. At most, they may be able to flip 180 degrees for the cases where the monitor was installed upside down, but not be able to display a vertical game on a horizontal oriented tube.

I am hijacking this thread a bit but... That is so weird. I have a HS friend who once stuck a pair of tweezers into an outlet in a HS biology class. The main difference is that he placed his hand on a classmates shoulder, who placed his hand on the teachers shoulder, and lit him up like a Christmas tree! It was quite funny at first, but the glee quickly faded... if you know what I mean.

Now back to the discussion at hand.

I actually used to have so much stuff that I would store stuff inside other cabinets. You could just about store a Sega mini inside a Space War!

EVERY game in my apartment works!

Well, except for that Pong clone that is supposed to get picked up this weekend, and those 9 games in the basement. But the ones in the living room and bedroom work!

The appropriate number of cabinets to own is however many you currently own, plus one.

I think one cab for pretty much every major variation..

Horizontal uprights (2 player), Vertical Uprights (2 player), cocktail, Racing cab, cockpit, and 1 dedicated 4 player cab  ;D

We all would love to have several (many) cabs , but isnt that why we all have mame so we only need one or two.

As for Mame cabinets, 3 is a good number.

For me that equals.

1 4-way vertical cocktail.

1 Frankenpanel horizontal upright.

1 giant vertical cocktail (pot spinner, trackball, and t-stick plus on each side).
