Sound Blaster 16 PCI with DMAME
« on: November 09, 2002, 03:52:06 pm »
From what i've read, the Sound Blaster 16 PCI card is one of the most difficult cards to set-up for DOS.

If anyone has already done this and can shed a bit of light on the matter, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

hehehehehe

it used to be the easiest... by far!  trouble for most others was that you had two complete different settings... One for their own drivers and one for soundblaster since that was the only way to get compatibility.

no drivers... just set enviorment variables.

example (address 220, irq 5, dma 1)
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
or
but I don't remember what they all mean..
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6

btw, there are programs that you can download from creative that will configure your card and create the autoexec for you.  diagnose I think the exe was called.

btw, I haven't done this in well... 8 years or so....

There's a little bit of info on these sites:

http://www.mameworld.net/emuadvice/main.html
http://www.mybargins.com/dosmame/

Not a whole lot of info on PCI soundcards, but maybe enough to get you going.

Actually, there is something much more difficult when using this card.  I think the probably lies in the fact that DOS ALWAYS configures this card to IRQ 7.  The trick is to get it initialize at IRQ 5.

This site:

http://www.msu.edu/user/jonesdes/html/bstsound.htm

provides a little insight into the Blaster 16 PCI card and says configuring the card for IRQ 5 is the real trick - that if you use his DOS drivers, its no problem,
but the readme.txt file for those DOS drivers says the sound cards CANNOT use IRQ 5??  Its very confusing.

Thanks Oscar.  That first link seems to provide a more definitive answer regarding the problem with PCI type cards.  I'll give that shot.

Is there a jumper on the card that you can switch to have it default to IRQ 5? One of my old sound cards had that.

Dunno, just thinking out loud. ;D
