Router bit size for T-molding.
« on: March 16, 2005, 10:20:56 am »
I am ready to assemble my cab, but first need to cut the groove for the T-Molding (5/8").

I don't know what size bit I should use with my router (as this is actually the first time I will use it! ::) )

Any help is greatly appreciated!  ;D

really?  I'm suprised.  Ive NEVER seen them there.

I'm still hoping someone puts one up on Buy/Sell/Trade forum.  I don't know how long they last... but the number of projects that need one... then done forever... there should be some who want to send one out for 10 bucks shipped... Seems like a fair deal.

Yup.. new they are 16+shipping...  Why I thought 10 bucks shipped for a used one would be a good deal... might even get 14 shipped.  Would really cut the initial cost of that bit.

I used 3/32" and it was perfect.  1/8" is definitely too big and IMO, 1/16th is too small.  1/16th will work for putting the molding in but if you ever have to take it out, it can damage the groove (depending upon materials used.)

I got mine here, the 1/16 wide one. I use all MDF and removing and replacing the t-molding has never done any damage to my slots.

Once again, BYOAC community to the rescue!  :D

Since I am working with MDF particle, I will try a 3/32, to avoid breakage on removal.

Thats a pretty good idea except you would have to have some type of "credit rating" incase someone is gonna steal it halfway through the chain!

BTW: if you live in the greater Las Vegas area, Woodworkers Emporium says they have these hard to locate bits. Perhaps I helped one or two ppl with that info  ;D

They close at 4 frickin 30! Who the hell closes at 4:30 in Vegas?! :P

I have used a 1/16 bit on a number of projects that needed T-molding and it works. I have never had a problem with it breaking either if I have had to pull the molding back out.

I was just at a Denver-area Home Depot about 10 minutes ago, buying a hinge template for hanging some doors.  Consequently, I was in the router section....

They had the 1/16" slot cutters (Porter Cable brand) for something I rememberbeing less than $15... $13.90 or something like that.

I'm thinking I can make a small fortune (like, 5 bucks ;D ) if I can find them for that price, since this comes up so often.
