21" monitor too deep for Tempest cab!
« on: March 15, 2005, 08:12:47 pm »
I have acquired a 21" Trinitron XGA monitor for my Tempest cabinet.  Based on some quick measurements, it looks like it will fit nicely (sans shell) into the existing wooden monitor frame, although I'll have to work out the mounting brackets.

Unfortunately, based on the same measurements it looks like I'm going to have major problems with the depth of the monitor.  The monitor is ~19" deep, and it looks like there's only 12" at the top of the cabinet.  I will be making more detailed and accurate measurements, but I'm not hopeful.

Any suggestions?  I'd rather not run it with the rear panel off (better to keep out kids & cats), so I guess I'll have to build something.  Well, it was missing the panel anyway.

But for anyone else thinking of putting a big monitor into a Tempest cabinet, be forewarned!

Okay, I've done some more measurements and it looks like it will fit . . . barely.  I will have to push the monitor as far forward as I can, so the monitor face will be almost touching the inside of the glass.  And even then, I won't be 100% certain until I have it in place.

On the plus side, making the bezel will be a cinch since it will be completely flat.

You often have to do a cutout on the back when replacing a 19" arcade monitor with a 21" PC monitor, due to the size of the case and the big neckboard.

I often use some more wood and enclose that part again.

Often that won't help a lot with a PC monitor, they often have these massive neckboards on them.

Oh yeah, that's without the case (though still with the shielding; removing it might give me another 1/4" so I'd rather leave that on.).  Most of the depth is the tube itself.

I'm also not looking forward to trying to hold a 77lb monitor steady so my wife can mark the mounting holes.  Maybe if I put the cabinet on it's back.
