CP design - Need comments/suggestions
« on: March 13, 2005, 04:37:03 pm »
Hey Guys,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I've been wanting to make a cabinet for a few years now and I'm finally getting around to doing it. I just finished the design I'm thinking of using for the CP and was wondering if I could get some comments/suggestions for it. :)

I know theres a couple things people will point out. One being that I'm using 7 buttons for players 3/4. This is because I plan on doing a lot of SNES playing on it, otherwise I'd have stuck to the standard 4 button layout for players 3/4. The other thing is that the player 3/4 joysticks are angled. I haven't decided whether to angle or not to angle. I'm going to do a test setup both ways before finally deciding.

I've already bought all the buttons, joysticks, IPAC4, Happ 3" trackball, etc. I'm going with the T-Sticks from Ultimarc so I can have 4-way/8-way all in one. So I'm all ready. I just would like to get some feedback on the CP design before I start cutting wood. :) Thanks in advance!

For those interested, here is a link to a full size jpeg of the panel along with the visio I made.

Your CP is very close to what I built and I like it.

Looks fine.. But there aren't many (any?) 4-player games that require more than 3-4 buttons.

Can you use this kind of setup for some of the later Street Fighter vs. games?

Just curious.

Your CP is very close to what I built and I like it.  People haven't had any issues with the angling.  Pictures of my setup can be found on the web site in my sig (and as always be warned it's a free site and they are fond of pop-ups).  I went with 8 buttons because I wanted the button layout of the games to stay the same as much as possible (i.e. neo games had the 4 buttons, fighters with the 7, etc.)  The cupholders are interesting and if you have the room and don't need the space for graphics should work well.  I mounted my holders to the back edge of the CP, but if you don't know they are there you can see them.... this would definately put them in the open where they would get used.

Out of curiosity, how wide is your CP overall?

Thanks for your reply. I plan on using cupholders similar to these...

I found that link in an old post on this board. Its going to be oak with no graphics anywhere. I have to make it look as much like furniture as possible or the wife won't let it in the house.  :)

The CP dimensions are 120cm x 50cm. So about 48" x 19".
