"Pure" DOS .mp3 jukebox program?
« on: November 06, 2002, 02:20:29 am »
I have a Taito Egret II JAMMA cabinet in which I'm running AdvanceMenu and AdvanceMAME from DOS with an Ultimarc J-Pac. Right now I have an ASUS CUBX board with a PIII 733 and Jetway Blade T64 3D graphics and Ensoniq AudioPCI sound cards, and sound works great in MAME.

I have been messing around with a DOS program called MPEGone to play an "intro" video before loading AdvanceMenu. After getting it working in the right graphic mode, I couldn't get sound working. I've been talking with Saka (Mon-Arc Plus, Blade T64 driver guy) about my problem, and he recommended a new motherboard with SiS or VIA chipset and a Hercules sound card with the Cyrrus CS4624 chipset to get sound working, which brings me to the subject of this post...

Here's the URL to MPEGone, by the way, for anyone who is interested.
http://www.multimediaware.com/mpeg/

I downloaded a program called Mpxplay, which is a DOS-based 32-bit audio player that worked well before I got sound working with AdvanceMenu/MAME (IRQ of the sound card was being auto set to 7) but doesn't work now with IRQ 5 for the soundcard. It has a reasonably good "real DOS" interface (see the link below) but I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to get sound working properly for both MAME and Mpxplay, and I want to have jukebox capabilities in my cabinet also.

Here's the URL to Mpxplay...
http://mpxplay.tripod.com/

And the interface...

My problem is that I'm limited to resolutions below 640 x 480 because of the arcade monitor, so DOSCab won't work for me, and not only doesn't Damp not seem to work, but I don't want a "command line" player.

Does anyone know of a "pure" DOS (ASCII display, or graphical interface in the 320 x 240 range) application that will fill the role of jukebox? I was unable to find any way to reconfigure Mpxplay to accept IRQ 5, which would make it useable. I have mailed the developer for advice, but haven't received a response yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!

I'm working on getting DOSCab Jukebox running in lower resolutions now.  Give me a few more days...

Just FYI, thanks to help from Saka, I bought a Jetway 694TAS motherboard, a 1.1 GHz Celeron to go with it, and a Hercules GameSurround Fortissimo III 7.1 sound card. With Saka's CS4624 (Cyrrus) drivers, not only do I have sound during the mpeg startup video, and in AdvMAME/Menu, but I also have perfectly working sound using MPXPlay for my .mp3s.

It may be sort of DOS-ugly with its ASCII interface, but it does work well, and can be configured to work with your control, I believe.

Chris, if you make a low-res port of DOSCabsoftware, I'd like to try it also. A nice graphical interface would be preferable. :)

I'm working on it.. this weekend is my 12 year wedding anniversary, though, so I probably won't get very far this weekend... :)

Cool.  That would be great Chris.  I'm using a Wells U3100 monitor now which does support SVGA at 1024x768 interlaced, but the current version of DOScab isn't working correctly.

Right now, my suspicion is that my ATI Rage Pro card is having trouble outputting that resolution at interlaced mode.  I did purchase a Trident T64 Blade video card which is probably the most optimum card for arcade monitor use and interlaced modes.

Try ading the following to the [Settings] section of JUKEBOX.INI:

RefreshRate = 0

This will keep DOSCab Jukebox from trying to set a refresh rate.  Right now it's trying to force the rate to 72hz which fails with your monitor.
