A few photos of a big monitor shoehorn job.
« on: March 10, 2005, 09:11:03 pm »
I had fooled around with this cocktail in the past, I even had it functional with Mame at one point, but I really wanted a vertical one.

Well, I managed to shoehorn a 27" vertical monitor into a 19" horizontal cocktail cabinet.

The non-viewable portion of the monitor actually extends slightly under the control panels, but the viewable area is fully visible. I have less than 1/4" of clearance in several places, but I got it in there.

I am still kicking around control panel ideas.

I have several control panel theories.

Panel 1, 8-way and trackball - duplicate on panel 2.

Panel 1, 8-way and trackball - panel 2 two 8-way positions.

Panel 1, trackball and dual 8-ways, panel 2 spinner and dual 8-ways (perhaps make one a top fire).

This was a Dunk Shot cocktail at one point, I got it with a bad monitor and no board, and it is an almost impossible board to find (the game is really rare, not very fun, and the boardset romswaps to a few EXPENSIVE boards).

I removed the big plastic side marquees (which made it too wide to fit through a normal doorway), and filled the holes they left behind, I left the slot where the light went, and I will be putting some sort of light back in there.

I literally spent about 2 hours getting this monitor to fit, I kept having to remove more and more of the innards of the cocktail.

Oh, and since there is little in the photo to truly give an idea of scale, you play that cocktail standing up and the control panels are 26" wide (wider than most pre '91 uprights).

hehe cool!  if you have a plastic 19" bezel lying around you should put it on top of that and take a pic  ;D  That would show folks how massive that thing really is.

My bezel, 2nd trackball and 2nd t-stick plus are on the way (at least I hope they are, I sure paid for them).

Ok, I painted it black and I am not liking the black. I have either white or black t-molding I can use, and I already have some red paint. It is going to have red joysticks and white trackballs.

Any color scheme suggestions? I already have the red paint, but I am afraid that will be way too loud? Brown maybe? Battleship grey? I'll also need a pair of control panel overlays as well, maybe I should see what matched overlays I can scare up first and then paint to match those?

Hmm, how about a pair of these?

what is the height of this cocktail?  I may want to make something similar some time.  It would make a great Horizontal cocktail with lots of room for controls.

What games do you imagine playing on this the most?
That would help with the theme & colors

Man, you have to put a trackball on each side of that thing so you can play atari football. God I pumped a lot of quarters in that game.

That thing is looking awesome, paigeoliver.  I really like that style of cocktail table, simplistic with nice curves.  Good work squeezing the monitor in there, as well.  I'm sure that will get noticed.  BTW, if you want my opinion, I'd say do a Track and Field layout.  I bet with 26 inches it could go along with the joys and trackball pretty.  My friend and I were pounding madly on the top three buttons of my SFII/NeoGeo button layout just yesterday.  Whatever you decide, good work so far.

I finally decided on each side having a t-stick plus 3 buttons and a trackball. I am still nowhere near done, I haven't even got the panels done yet.

I'll try to do this tommorrow. Send me a PM if you don't see any basic measurements by tommorrow night. I'll just give basic measurements, as you won't be able to build an exact replica due to the fact that this sucker uses curved glass.

Also, if building one I would suggest adding an inch of length if you want to use a 27" display, an extra inch would make the install MUCH easier.

Ok paigeoliver, I thought it over all night, couldn't sleep and now I'm certain that you must ditch the joy and trackball and buttons except one for each side, or you could keep the T-sticks and restrict them to only move down, sure you see what I'm getting at ... then start vectorizing those floating dead cats, if you haven't already, and get them printed at 26 inches wide for the CP's.  See where I'm going with this?  Then you should definitely send me your "extra" trackball for $20 shipped.  I'll send you a money order in a week or two, after I've fully playtested the trackball, if I get around to it.  Anyway, I can't wait to see the finished Uber-Uo-Poko project.  Can I come over next month and check it out, a short 12 hour drive from Southeastern Ohio?  I could leave at six in the morning and make it just in time for dinner and BTW I'm a vegetarian who doesn't touch partially hydrogenated oils and the like, SO NO MORE MICROWAVE MEALS!

 :) ;) ;D :) ;) ;D :) ;) ;D :) ;) ;D

Quick measurements as promised.

27.7" wide.
39.5" long.
37" tall in the middle, curving down to 36" tall at the panels.

A few updated pictures. Is not functional at all yet, just hooked up a laptop to the display to show a game.

I REALLY need some overlays.

I was actually able to improve the TV picture quality quite a bit by UNFOCUSING the picture slightly. Not sure WHY this works, but I think it has something to do with effectively removing the interlacing. Not as good as a real monitor, but it is decent.

Great job, PaigeOliver, much better than my suggestion.  Those two trackballs look perfect for a head-to-head match of Atari's Off the Wall.  Still lovin' the design of that table.

Cheers,

I already have a 27" Uo Poko. Anyway, I already KNOW what a dedicated Uo Poko looks like in my mind, the cabinet is shaped like tha cat (ala Burgertime) and the joysticks are each the same color as the kitty they control.
