Anyone with an original Pac Man joy?
« on: March 10, 2005, 07:12:54 pm »
I need the diameter of the shaft on an original pac man or ms pac man joystick.  I am having some custom hadles made to replace the stock ones on the ms pac reunion sticks and I am wondering how close to original they will be.

Not at all, but I don't know who I will be getting them from yet.  Still getting quotes from local machine shops.

I'll check, I don't have a micrometer though, how exact does it need to be?

Just looking for a ballpark number...within a millimeter or better if you can.

mm?

9/16" ;)

I'll run back over there...

I measured 14mm.

FWIW:
14mm vs. 9/16" is about 0.01" difference based on a conversion of 2.54 cm/inch.  So my eyes are pretty good.  A mic would be better than a ruler though.  It's def in the ballpark.

Thanks, definitely close enough.  I'm going with a 13mm shaft so it should look very similar besides not having the black color...btw what is that black color?  Is it paint or a black oxide finish or something else?

Actually I seem to remember it being a black plastic sleeve or something, I have a couple of the 8-way versions of the Pac-sticks are home, I can't check at the moment, but I thought is was a plastic sleeve.

And those original pac-man joysticks are one of the most overengineered thing you have ever seen. If happs sold them today they would cost $200.

Whilst were on the subject of custom 'sticks....

I made these stainless ones to replace the naff black ones that came as standard with my Happ rotaries.

The only thing is they are to heavy. The weight of them and the angle of my CP means they take very little pressure to activate the down microswitch and they some time do not spring back to center.

Im going to make some alluminum ones and get them annodised and this should hopefully solve the problem.

Just means im stuck with these till I can find something to do with them.

Looks like paint to me, I tapped it with a steel ruler and it sounds like a metal shaft.  It's all mounted right now, I'll check into it more tonight.

It's over-engineering alright, the stick shift on my car isn't built like this thing. ;)

I finally got my original Pacman joystick hooked up last night and, MAN, I can't believe how comfortable it felt.  It was like I was 12 years old all over again.  It is a massive beast, but I just like the feel of this joystick for Pacman (Duh) more than any other.

Just for point of conversation, the joysticks I like best for Pacman in order are:

1.  Original Pacman Leafswitch joystick
2.  Ms. Pac/Galaga reunion stick
3.  Wico 4 way leaf (although the throw seems a little long for Pacman)

What joy do you guys prefer for Pacman?

Most are metal shafts inside black plastic sleeves. The sleeve measures 14mm the shaft is 7. This reminds me, I need to buy some grommets some of mine.

I felt the same way about my Galaga stick. I used to have a Happ in there with a 2-way restrictor, but now the original feels SWEEEEET!
NO MORE!!

Franco, swap the spring for a heavier one, if you don't have a heavier one laying around then take the spring out of the other joystick and put them both in the same one and see if that fixes the problem.

Heavy springs are no fun to play on for hours on end.
An ounce of image is worth a pound of performance.

Hmmm, my Multiwilliams machine doesn't agree with that assessment, It has the spring style Wicos with heavy springs subbed in and it is better to play with for hours than it was with the light springs.
