USB power while PC is off
« on: March 08, 2005, 08:15:45 pm »
Hi all,

My trackball is light from underneath with an LED powered by USB.  The problem is that when the machine turns off, power is still going to the USB ports (happens when the machine goes to hybernate on its own).  I've tried two different machines, and the behaviour is the same... anyone run into this?  I want the artcade to turn off when not in use, and that should include the LEDs :)

Thanks!

You could always power the LED from a different source.  You use the computer's power LED.

Is there something in the BIOS that decides whether to power USB or not...because Im pretty sure there is.  Look around in there.

there's no obvious option I can see... I'll look again and look for something else... I suspect it may be the standby settings (wake up on something and so on...)

From my experience, If it is possible there's a setting in the BIOS that allows USB to turn the system on via standby, but there is a jumper on the motherboard that actually controls the Voltage going to the USB ports while the system is off.  Post the motherboard model number and we can probably tell you where the jumper is or if it is possible.

Also, unless it's an LED made to be operated off the USB port I highly suggest not powering the LED or anything else off of the USB ports.  It would be better to power it via the power supply.

I would consider lit trackball while the machine is off to be a bonus, not a problem.

This is a known problem. I used to have my mouse plugged into a USB port, and I had the same problem with the LED in it staying lit. The solution is to get one of those little USB to PS/2 adapters and use that. The PS2 port does NOT stay powered.

2600 is correct.  most newer motherboards either have the USB standby power as an option in the BIOS or as a jumper on the motherboard (I think this is more common).

Post the motherboard model number and we'll try to help

Did you guys buy a ready built USB LED or build it yourself? I read that it's as simple as splitting off the 5v and ground and hooking both up to a 5volt led (with the correct polarity obviously) Do you guys see any potential problems with this? Thx!

Nah theres no problem with it.  Just get a simple USB cable (I had one that I accidently kept from a returned MP3 player) and cut off the end that DOES NOT connect to the computer :P  Strip down the wires.  Use the RED and BLACK wires to power the LED (might need a resistor if you don't get 5v LEDs) and tape off the other ones to prevent problems.  Search around modding websites for USB BENDLIGHT for an example.  People basically attach a clothes hanger to it for resistance and TADA!  A $2 bendlight!  If you need one done for you (which I can't possibly see) Ill make one for shipping costs and some money for the LED and USB cable.  You're better off making your own though...just don't get your USB cable from Futureshop :P

Thx for the prompt reply. I'll probably go that route, spliting off of the usb cable going to my Happs trackball. Slowly the pieces are coming together.

I had the same issue, i ended removing the trackball led from the ipaq and taking 2 wires and the power led cable for a case from an old computer case to the motherboard, and connecting that to the trackball led.  now the trackball led only lights when i have power to the pc, and since there was no need to see a power light on the case, it all worked out well

You should check voltages though because those LEDs may not have enough power for yours to replace them.  I just set my motherboards to not supply power when USB is off, usually there is a BIOS setting, but on my new computer (3 months old) theres a jumper on the board itself.

I'd give your motherboard manual a quick check over as well to possibly solve this before you start hacking up cables and such.

Most motherboards come with jumpers for each USB port to be either powered via Vcc or Vsb.

Most motherboards I've come across in the last year have started by default to have the rear ports jumpered for power on standby so that mouse movement, or USB keyboards can wake them up.

This topic is old, but it's relevant.

I'm running into a similiar problem, using a mini power minder. I had to switch to a new motherboard and can't find the option to disable the USB power. The motherboard is a DFI N2 Ultra A.

If you want your mouse to not have power, you need to use the PS/2 port. (Most USB mice come with a USB to PS/2 adaptor, so shouldn't be a problem, yah?)

I don't see any jumpers in the manual.  If it's not a BIOS option, then you probably can't disable the USB standby power.  Check the power settings in the BIOS to make sure.  It might be listed as a "wake up" setting of some kind.

Not a mouse issue. The power minder uses the USB port to check voltage, and when it detects none, it shuts off everything connected to it. Worked great on my AN7.

I didn't find anything in the manual either. I'll have to go through the BIOS with a fine tooth comb again.

You should try plugging into a different set of ports.  Maybe not all of them have standby power.  Often the front ports do not.

If that route fails, you could make an adapter cable by hacking a usb extension cable (passive, not active) and grafting it to a 4 pin molex connector that you can plug into a drive power connector from your power supply.  Just wire up the 5V line and ground, leaving the rest unconnected.  USB extension cables are cheap, as long as you don't buy them at Best Buy or Circuit City.
