Power Connector
« on: February 28, 2005, 09:53:21 am »
I seen this on someone's cabinet and can't exactly think of the name for it.  It looks like the power connector on the back of a computer power supply, but you would mount in a cabinet instead and it has the rocker switch also.  I wanted this so I can plug a smart strip inside and run on wire from the outside to the wall socket.  If someone know the name for it and a possible link...

Thanks

Tim

You mean like one of these, but with a built in rocker? Never seen one, but you could try calling an electronics supply and see what they say.

Yeah, I've seen it with a rocker as well.  Keep googling and I'm sure you'll come up with something

That one's bigger than the one I've seen (and that one also contains a fuse which I don't remember seeing) so you can probably get the price down some.
Good luck

I was remembering something like this, and it's just under $2

Actually, I just posted a thread called "Power Entry" and it has a link to the one I want to use from jameco.  Its very cheap, less than a dollar, so I figure, why not add the touch :)  I just had to make sure it was safe.

I don't think I've ever seen one with a built-in rocker switch, but if it helps, what you are searching for is called an IEC socket.

Yep, they have em with rockers,  I ordered one and wired it up, works like a charm.  Only problem is, I misplaced it....dammit.  Ordered up
another one from mouser.com, this time illuminated.  Woohoo....and FYI, this is called a Power Entry Module.

Hey vader,

That looks like a cool idea - what part# did you order?  Also, I'm electrically-challenged, would I need a 1-pole or 2-pole?

Thanks!

I don't understand why you would need that to use a power strip inside your cabinet.  There is no outlet on the inside, so you would have to wire the smart strip to it.  Why couldn't you just wire the smart strip to the current power wires inside and use the current power switch?  If it's a new cab the same thing would work, or wire an outlet inside the cabinet.   ???

I think it's more for cosmetics.  You can either have one of these supplying power to your cabinet, or you can have a power cord hanging out of it from the powerstrip.  Doesnt look as sloppy if you have one of these and you can buy the cables at a dollar store.

ok, i'm resurecting this thread to get some input about an entry model i want.  first, i'm looking to add this to the outside of my cab just so that i don't have to have a cord sticking out for power.  second, i'll have power strips on the inside, so do i need fuses or filters?  i'm not looking to save money, just to do this right the first time.

i figure i only need the basic connector like on the first page of schurter power entry stuff, but i really do't know.  i'm also looking to order some buttons, otherwise i'd rob an old power supply.

thanks for the help guys.
