will 49 way j/s work as spinner?
« on: February 26, 2005, 03:38:28 pm »
Does anybody know if these joysticks will work like a spinner?  Since they are optical?  While we are on the subject, what about the 12 way optical?

Thanks!

Steve

PS-  If anyone else is interested, the seller has a few more of these for sale.  I have bought a few items from this seller before including working PCBs.

for the 49 way joystick, it uses optics to determine what position the joystick is in.  It doesn't detest direction of movement or such.

12 way optical?
huh?  Never heard of this type of joystick.
There's machanical rotory joysticks that are 12 positional, that's what I think you are thinking about.  This could work but isn;t fine tuned enough to work well for spinner games.

Thanks.  That was exactly what I wanted to know about the 49 way.  For the 12 way optical, I meant the ones used in caliber 50.  I just assumed they were 12 position, like the mechanical rotaries.  I actually bought a complete CP for caliber 50 a long time ago.  I ASSumed they were mechanical.  Was looking for replacements for my Time Soldiers.  So same question, for those?  Work like a spinner?  Or no direction either?

Thanks Again!

There's two type of rotory joysticks.

12 position mechanical, and optical.  Optical is just like a spinner put on the bottom of the joystick.

I wouldn;t go that route to save space as it doesn;t spin as smoothly as a spinner and you really need a knob to get the control feel for those games.

I was actually thinking about the possibilities if using the optical sticks instead of mechanicals and druins interface for a mame machine with rotary sticks.  If of course, mame allows the rotary games to be played with a spinner for the rotary control.

SteveJT, If you end up getting a real spinner and have no use for these then I would buy them from you. Are they the Happ ones or the green SNK ones ? I'm getting a Calibur 50 machine from a guy at work and it has the wrong joysticks in it so I'm looking for a pair of the green handled SNK optical rotarys Please keep me in mind. :)

One has a green handle and the other was replaced with a yellow handle.   I think my dumb @ss paid $50 plus shipping for the whole CP, thinking I was getting 2 LS-30's.  I will keep you in mind if I don't deceide on keeping them.  Send me a PM here so I remember who wanted them.  You're not to far away either.

People have used optical rotarys with MAME to play the mechanical rotary games.  They work pretty well, but don't have the distinct click/feel that the mechanicals do, which bothers some people, including myself.

Folks have also used them as a spinner, or even a steering wheel.  Reports say it works OK, but not as good as the real thing, as they have no weight, and won't keep spinning.  Personally, I'd only use 'em as a spinner on Arkanoid and Pong type games.
