Just got my Happ rotary opticals...
« on: October 29, 2002, 04:37:46 pm »
My Happs Optical just arrived via UPS, and looking at the optical connector, I was expecting a 15 pin interface to use with Druid's board, but instead it's only a 4 pin.  Anyone work with these yet?  I've got a KE72 for the encoder that I'm going to use, and I do have the optional trackball interface.
Still in the collecting parts and ideas phase of cabinet building.

According to the manual the interface board is for the mechanical version NOT the optical version of the rotary joystick.  The optical version looks like it interfaces like a spinner but not seeing the circuit diagram I am only guessing that that is what the 4 wire interface is for.

Link to rotary interface board.

Doing a bit more research myself, Ultimarc has a pic on the optical pinout of the Happs joystick here:
http://www.ultimarc.com/optipac4.html

It looks like I would need to wire each rotary to a seperate analog interface, X axis for P1, and Y for P2.  I'm thinking it also has the benefit of allowing me to use a mouse in windows by rotating the joysticks, kinda like an Etch-A-Scetch...heh

You confused optical with 12way.  An optical used an encoder disc, like a spinner.  A 12way is positional.
So oyu hook up an optical like a spinner and a 12way with the druin interface.

That's what I was thinking, that I wouldn't need Druin's board with the optical.  Thanks for confirming it :)
