Defender cab does nothing when plugged in.
« on: February 23, 2005, 08:35:31 pm »
Im looking to buy a defender cab from a guy, and while I havent been able to look at it myself. He says that nothing powers up when turned on. No lights, no monitor, no sound, nothing. Anyone have any ideas on what this may be. I dont want to buy it if it is to much hassle to fix. But if its just a fuse, or power supply issue then Ill go for it.

If even the coin door and marquee LIGHTS aren't turning on, then that means power isn't going through. Could be fuse, power supply, or simply a broken wire connection.

Play dumb, talk his price down (tell him you'll have to spend lots of money hiring someone to fix it), BUT make sure you look inside first to see that the "guts" are in there in the first place. Might be a rat nest inthere (literally!). Better to find out before you hand the cash over.
NO MORE!!

Yeah, if nothing is going it could well be a very cheap fix. However you are taking a risk just depends how much you are willing to gamble.

You need to be able to check out the cab yourself.  Thats like me saying Ill sell you my car right now, but it doesnt turn on.  That could be a bunch of problems!  You need to look at it and take your time until you figure out the problem, but dont make it obvious, pretend you're stupid.  That way you can say itll cost you a bunch and all that stuff.  Example:

I was at some warehouse place and there was a 512mb MP3 player.  It was selling for a few hundred canadian.  It had a small scratch by the volume control and for some reason it wouldnt turn on.  I looked at it, found that the battery connection was crappy, but instead of yelling " OH THATS EASY ", I played dumb.  I insisted it would cost a bundle to even be able to turn it on and that without any expansion cards for space (the guy didnt see it had 512 mb, he though it was empty) that it was rendered useless.  I bought it, twisted the little spring a bit, and I now have a full mp3 player for TEN CANADIAN DOLLARS!  It has FM radio and all that crap too...

Although this has nothing to do with your situation, just take my advice and act stupid.  You don't know whats wrong and to pay someone to look at it will surely cost alot.

I would buy it if the price is right, and the price should be right since its not working at all, half the fun for me is to find out whats wrong and make it new again , theres not many of these cabs around in good condition, how is the art work on the cab, is the wood all beat up thats the main thing

Take note... If you are buying from a professional of any nature... He would know that no power at all means power going into the cabinet and should be cheap.

I could see someone that knows they fried the board, swapping monitors with a broken one... then blowing a fues, putting it in... and selling it as is.

The cabinet by itself is worth 50 - 100 bucks depending on the quality of the art.  A new monitor is 200 shipped to your door.  The joystick is worth about 10- 30 bucks depending on the quality.  The iso transformer is pretty cheap (check bob roberts).  The boards come up on ebay all the time... but not to many are tested good...
