Star Wars Yoke Hack
« on: February 23, 2005, 04:52:44 pm »
Has anyone experienced any trouble getting the 1 UP Arcade's Star Wars / Dual Strike yoke hack to work properly?   I am hoping that I'm just overlooking something very simple but I can't seem to get it to work.

Here is the problem: after plugging in the USB cable and loading the Dual Strike software from the CD (upon being prompted by Windows that new hardware was detected) my mouse pointer scrolls off the screen on the right hand side.  The pointer will come back on the screen if I move my mouse to the left but it will scroll right back off the right side again.  The only way I can get it to stop is by unplugging the SW hack USB cable so I didn't even get a chance to test and see if the hack is working properly.

At first I though it might be a problem from trying to get it to work on Win XP so I tried on my Win 98 PC and it did the same thing.  Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?  Unfortunately 1Up's instructions don't give any details on loading the software and drivers and synching it up so I was hoping I could tap into the experiences here on the BYOAC NG to see how I can get this set-up properly.  I wanted to search first to see the if this has already been covered but stupid me can't seem to find or figure out where the "search" function is on this NG.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

It sounds to me like you might have mis-wired somewhere.  The only problem I've ever had with the drivers was in WinXP/2000 the characters appear as "webdings" when you use the key remapping feature.

Sorry I can't be of much help.  I did the hack 3 times and it worked perfectly.

Does the cursor go left when you turn the yoke to the left?

If so, you may need to hold it to the left a bit, and use the mouse to get into the calibration mode.

If it's miswired (shorted wiper on the pot), it shouldn't allow you to go left at all.
It will likely STOP the cursor if held full left because that will be a virtual short left, and right.
If it's just miscalibrated (probable, given that you haven't been ABLE to calibrate it yet), It should go left at some point.

When I was working out the hack, trying to figure out which wires go where, I tested the pot connections by just touching the wires in different positions.

On three different controls.  With three different DS boards.  ;)

I don't think he's guilty...

AFAIK, he had a SW yoke (which paige got because I'm a MORON!) and 2 T2 guns (which worked great once I got them configured!)

Thanks in advance for all the responses.  Your help and insight is very much appreciated!

When I was finally able to get to my workshop late last night I went through and checked the items you had suggested

All I can say is that there *could* be a problem with not having the ground wires separated.  The pots on the DS are wired separately, so that seems the easiest answer.

Hi, I yes I think you need to keep the grounds seperte - the problems you describe (haywire readings with no stability) are symptomatic of trying for force two "grounds" together when they are not common...

Thanks again for everyones input.  The problem is now 90% resolved.

The ground wires definitely have to be separated for it to work properly.  Once I did that all the erratic, jumping around behavior stopped and the vertical movement of the controller worked fine.  However, I still had the scrolling to the right issue but at least I knew I was on the right track.  Thinking I might have a bad horizontal pot after all I decided to connect one of the DS pots to see if that fixed the problem.   At first it didn't but once I centered the pot it was fine.  Decided to try centering the pot on the controller and BAM...it works like a dream!!  Full vertical and horizontal movement in the DS set-up screen.

I decided to give it a quick test in MAME/Star Wars (as I only had a few more minutes before heading out the door ) and the controller worked okay.  I'm sure I'll have to spend a little time tweaking the settings but overall I quite happy with it.  My only issue was that the thumb and trigger buttons didn't respond in MAME.  They worked fine in the DS set-up screen and I have both the Mouse Input and Joystick Input enabled in MAME but still no go.  If someone knows what the quick solution to that problem is I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm sure I'm probably overlooking something fairly obvious but I haven't had the time to really look into it yet so any advice would be helpful.

Thanks again for you good folks who spend the time sharing your knowledge and experiences with the rest of us.  What a huge, huge help you all are!

Cheers!
