Coin Door Issues
« on: May 08, 2002, 01:47:05 pm »
Hi all,
Having a problem with my new Happ coin door.   When I drop a coin while I have notepad up, things look great - I get a single correct response per coin every time.  When running roms in Mame32 I get mixed results:

On half the games (examples: pac-man, galaga) it works great.  Single credit per coin.

On a very few games (example: Strikers 1945) the ROM freezes with "COIN ERROR".

On the remaining 45% (centipede) of the ROMS it just ignores the coin completly.

It does not seem to be split between new and old games or any other pattern.  It is very consistant - acts the same way in each game every time.

Any ideas??
Thanks,
Chad

The connection posts are laid out similar to Happ pushbuttons, but you can't wire them the same.  I was also getting strange results before I checked.

If they are connected right, verify that the game configs for the games that aren't working have coin1 and coin2 defined correct.

I think I have seen this issue discussed before, and the conclusion was that the switch isn't being held closed for a long enough period of time.  One of the suggestions was to carefully bend the trip wire so the coin would hit it sooner, but I don't know it that was successful or not.

You might be able to tell if this is the issue by using your finger to hold down the tripwire.  If it works then, then that is probably the problem.

I think someone else had a similar problem, and found that they had accidentally wired up the normally closed contacts,
so that the switch was always pressed except when the coin hit the switch.  I think this looked fine in notepad, because it would see a key release event when the coin hit, and then a key pressed event after the coin passed, so, as long as key repeat isn't turned on, you see only one press but it is very long.

I haven't put my coin door on my machine yet, but I would be interested to find out what you do to fix your problem.

Thank you both for chiming in.  I will try your suggestions later tonight and let you know.
