start buttons that just say "start" ?
« on: February 22, 2005, 02:19:00 am »
Does anybody know where I can buy white start buttons that just say "START" on them instead of the little people icons?

I'm pretty sure I've seen them before but I can't remember where.

Ok they aren't white but these would look fairly good when lit.

Found this.
They do a range of other backlit buttons and also blank white ones that you could easily put your own transfer onto.

Other than that why not just make transfers to cover a standard set?

Blurry picture, but you just get any happs illuminted button, print your text on a transparency and install it inside the button.

Actually speaking of Happ. I think they do custom prints for pretty much any button you like.
Might be worth sending them an email.

They say this on their site, but there are minimum runs and such.   They suggested the transparency to me.  Works like a charm.  Print it out on your laserjet or inkjet printer.

Not sure what you mean here.  Professional as what?  I can tell you the ones I have done look professional.  Unless you are "in the know" and recognize them as happs buttons, you wouldn't know they don't come that way.  I am very picky and wouldn't put anything on my cab that looks "homemade".  Heres another pic of some start buttons:

I personaly like the traditional P1/P2 style on white (seen on Namco cabinets)... ^.^ but thats just me... others also like the little people... so many ppl for each button which represents the player.(as seen common on Capcom cabinets) theres always regular white.. ^.<

Those buttons are pretty big afaik.   They look like the "tag buttons" from my "Main Event" cab

Gotcha.  Me either, thats why I inquired about happs doing it, but it turns out to be pretty easy:  Use your laser or inkjet printer to print out your text/graphics.  The button assembly includes a round plastic insert, use this to trace around your text/graphic with a pen. Cut it out with a good pair of scissors.  Just print off a bunch of extras so you're guaranteed to cut out at least one good one.  Assemble it inside the button and viola!

I'd recommend to not try to use a start button.  Every cab I've made with a start button confuses everyone that walks up to it.  And I mean everyone, even myself.   It's best to map start to button 1 on player one.  Or button one on both players.  You will notice that as you run through the menu you automatically smack the first button to start.
There has to be some kind of university experiment out there to prove this.....
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

Do I actually have to coin up to FART, or can I set it on free play?

That's a good one too.  Or maybe one that says "COIN".

I wonder what the minimums are for a custom button order from Happ Controls.  Anybody know?

I know its not the same but you could always rig your coin mech (should just be a matter of putting a microswitch behind it), so that you could press the coin return mechanism and add credits that way.

Not sure about all types of mech but the 2 I have on my machine (red illuminated type) both have 'push in' surfaces designed for coin return.
