Has anyone built or had interest to build one of those
HUGE pedestal cabinets where the control panel and monitor
are separate units?

You might want to search for showcase cab, as that is what they are actually called. I don't know any examples to link you to, but I do know that some people here have gone that route.

If you want an excelent showcase cabinet goto the originator HanaHo. HanaHo made them for many manufacturers such as Capcom, Sega and others. www.hanaho.com.

It looks like a very nice cab & monitor, but I'm just not liking
the shape of the Ctrl Panel.

The front angled parts make the panel look too small to comfortably
fit 4 players and a track ball on...

im making a pedistal with fold up legs with teh computer and all controlls built in, that way, i can take it anywhere and hook it to any tv or computer monitor.

This IMO is the best of that breed. I'm not a fan of showcase cabs but the craftsmanship and ingenuity in this cab is astounding.

Man, I just tore one apart today. Seriously. I have it broken down. I took the PCB kit out and put it up for sale on ebay. Look at the pics, its the big black one.

#@!##@ Monitor went out. It was a 33" sharper image too. Bad tube, the chassis had more jumper wires than my old volkswagon.

Is this the one you want? I have some pics of the cab, and it's out in my garage now.

Figure on a 33 inch diagonal monitor or use a standard height on the control pedestal and you should be able to scale the drawings.

I'm taking this all in... ::deep breath::

I plan to just stick a 30+" TV in the unit using S-Video... but I'm sure
that can be done with some slight tweaking of the plans
(depending on the TV that is used)

I wonder if and ActLab light gun and Dreamcast light gun
will work properly thru plexiglass over the screen?

I have both but dont use them much.

I plan to use this thing w/a PC, Dreamcast (for fishing and Guns),
and a DVD player, and to use as a TV...
(Maybe to have ESPN on during poker games or something....)

Any know if some kind of wireless transmitter exists for Cable COAX?
I plan to put this machine in an area of the basement that is drywalled and going to be too hard to run a COAX to....

Heh, well I have yet to see one. I am a Cable Technician and where I work (Insight in Bloomington IN) has a lot of HUGE homes. So if it was to be done, thats where it would be done at. Alas, I have yet to encounter a wireless Coax device. Sorry!

If I have a slight 'curve' in the monitor and marquee's plexi
glass... I should be able to just slightly 'bend' the plastic
and slide it in place without it breaking.. right....?

Also, if there is a big 'ol ceiling light behind where the person stands at the control panel, and I am worried about the
light reflecting off the plexiglass..?

Would a bend help or make it worse?

My guess is that a bend may make the reflection worse. This is only based on the observation that a flat screen TV has a lot less reflection then a regular tube type which has a slight rounding to it.

I was planning on using my act-labs gun on this system... and something
just clicked.... its the old usb gun.
& I'm gonna use s-video... bummer... Im squooed.

I suppose there has been no other breakthru in light guns
w/svideo...

Like I said earlier.. I am planning to hook up my Dreamcast
too... I'll have 2 get a 2nd gun for that... Hopefully it shoots thru plexiglass.. I'll have to try it tonight.....

BTW, I just got a green light from someone who will help me cut the wood for this beast... I'm just about ready to start a thread in the PROJECTS area!!!
(But I have to think of a 'catchy' name for this cab.....)

Dreamcast tests good through the plexiglass.
Just got a 2nd gun off ebay.. so my 3 or 4 shooters for DC
definately will be incorporated into the cabinet.

Hooked up the PC to my 32" tv and tested S-Video.
Everything played like a dream. Much better than
on the 21" PC monitor.

On a TV, everything runs at the same size on the screen...
where on a monitor.. it was a hassle trying to stretch
certain games to the edges of the screen.

Cant wait to get going on this.

BY THE WAY.. Sears has a 32" Tv W/S-Video right now on sale
for DIRT CHEAP till 2/26...

I'll probably be picking mine up in the next day or two.

Is there ANY REASON if I am mainly using Mame/Daphne
That I would NEED more than 4 buttons for players 3 & 4 on a 4 plyr CTRL
Panel? I can't think of any reasons...
except for if I wanted to 'spread out' and play a game as player1 way on
the end of the control panel....

Any reasons you can think of in Mame/Daphne why I would want to
have 6 buttons on the ends of the control panel instead of 4?

I'd hate to have to go back later and add 2 more for some stupid reason....

^^ this one has come up a lot. Basically, the consensus seems to be that no more than 4 buttons are needed for players 3 and 4 in mame, and there really aren't many games for the emulators (i'm thinking primarily NES, SNES, Sega) that are 4 player and need a bunch of buttons. When you get to the newer console games, even 6 buttons probably isn't going to be enough anyways, and many use analog control and can't really be played well on standard arcade controls anyways (2d fighters an exception, of course). What I'd recommend (and what I did on mine) is that you use the standard 4 buttons for players 3 and 4, and put some contoller ports on your machine so that you can plug in console controllers (I used PSX USB adaptors on mine) for the odd times when you need more buttons for players 3 and 4, or just want to use a controller for the games you're playing (3d games, for instance...)
