sit down or upright?
« on: October 25, 2002, 05:10:25 pm »
If you had it to do over again, would you make a sitdown cab or an upright?

I am getting to the point where I have to build my cab and I'm wondering if I'm not going to get sore standing for hours at a time. Bar stools might ease it but I imagine since they don't really give any back support that after a while you're going to be groaning.

Standup, cause you still want to stand up when you get excited.  Can't play Track & Field sitting down.

What you need to get is some old, fat man chairs (high bar stools with backs):

Bar stools are generally too high (~30" high). Counterstools are the correct height (24-26" high). They're taller than a chair but shorter than a typical bar stool. They are available with or without backs. I prefer ones with a low back and no arms.

I'm in the process(aren't we all here?) of mame-ing a gutted upright cab, and a barstool is definitely on my parts list.

If a regulation barstool proves to be too high for comfort, then I geuss it's time to break out the power tools and the willingness to destroy(in the name of fun, of course!) and um, "shorten" a few legs :)

I think a sit-down cockpit style cab would be kickass, but I also see that it would be limiting the full range of games available.. If it was a semi dedicated cab, like for a particular genre it'd work right

If all goes well with this project, a cocktail will definitely be v2.0

Why limit your options?  I have both.  1) I think that a cocktail or sit-down cabinet is less expensive as a project.  2) The Japanese style sit-at cabinets are the best of both worlds.

Your possibilities are limited with both options, but make your decision based upon what you will be doing most of the time and what you enjoy the most.

That said.  I thought I could live without a few things when I started my project, but found out very quickly that I wanted it all.  I wanted horizontal and vertical.  I wanted true four way and true eight way.  I wanted trackball, spinner, and steering wheel.

Actually I meant the choices to be between a japanese-style sit down cab and a normal US upright.

wow that's insightful Snaaake... what might be more useful, is if you explained for the benefit of the original poster WHY you prefer uprights or why you feel so strongly about sit down cabinets (not cocktails - the japanese style...)

Did the sit down arcade games make fun of you as a child... perhaps taunting you because of your weight problem? (that's a joke, son...)

Cocktail table myself.  Why?  my wife would like my arcade stuff to take less room.

Bigger still... I wish I had built my own instead of convert an existing one.  But that was mainly because I didn't find a free cabinet and had to pay for shipping... sigh...

If I had the space (I don't..well..not really...well...maybe :D)

I'd get an old sit-down cab, any kind....make sure it would fit through
the door, and make it a mame sit-down cab.  But then I'd redo the insides,
put some nifty 5.1 speakers inside of it, a decent 21" Monitor, add some padding to the seat and make it like a PC Desk/Gaming cab kinda thing.

Only problem is, those things are HEAVY.......

Those japanese sit-down ones with the 25" Monitors I just don't like....there's something about them...... :)

Well I am the one who makes fun of people most of the time(all the time, just jokes).

The point was that it dont feel like real arcade machine when you are sitting down. Not much fun when playing street fighter. And those japanese cabs look weird too.I JUST HATE THE DESIGN and I feel like breaking those cabinets.
We live in America and those dumb cabs shouln't be here. There isn't many jap cabs around my area and if we see any then usually we dont spend any money on those machines.sucky design thats all :P.

btw, one more thing to think of.  Whatever you do, try to keep the monitor vertical (instead of a slant).

why?  Then you can get a vivo video card or a dvd player and make it more of a home entertainment cabinet with TV and DVD and maybe even a console or 2.

if the monitor is on a slant, then it sucks watching it from across the room.

Good point.  We obviously spend our money on more "important" things!   ;)

Yeah, but isn't it more comfortable to play on a monitor that is tilted?

I personally perfer sit down cab (the Japanese type)...
(the monitor is almost vertical..) and NOT cocktail like....

cos I don't have a lot of space.... with a full size standup cab, it will block the view and make the place a lot smaller... also... if I play for a long time, it should be nicer sitting down....

and for more excitement standing up !??!?... I'm not sure... I'm quite intense when I get playing..... but so far... ok for me....

so... I prefer Jap style sitdown cab .....

good luck !!   ;)  ;D
