My find of the day!
« on: February 15, 2005, 11:29:09 am »
Sorry, I never get a chance to gloat.
I picked up this 10 Yard Fight for $25 and it turns out to be a Stargate!  It's in really good shape, and I already got most of the parts for it.  Now I just need to figure out how to redo the side art...

Cool! So are you building a Stargate (or possibly multi-williams) or are you building a Stargate themed MAME cab?

Maybe the artwork is still under the white paint?

The white is actually formica glued on.  As a pull it off, the stargate paint is coming with it.  I am going to try a heat gun next.  I plan on fully restoring it to Stargate and still run mame on it.  I did this with a Frogger and a Robotron already and you get so much more use out of it.  I was thinking about painting the front kick panel red to match the sides because looking at it from the front, Stargate is pretty plain.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Southpaw

I remember back in the day (90's) at the Disneyland arcade, all their conversions had nice stuck-on siding instead of paint.

Sorry, no multi for this one.  It was one of my favorite games and it needs to be fully restored.  Now, what I will probably do is use the existing control panel that it came with an set it up with 2 joys and 6 buttons.  I will be able to swap out control panels and play much more than any multi can offer...

Thanks,
Southpaw

I loved the Disneyland arcades, both the modern stuff at the Space Mountain arcade and ther old electromechanical stuff at the Penny Arcade.

Nice find!
I just got one about a month ago. 75$
Good side art , glass bezel - no scrathches , cp was filled in for ? , clean coin door, no water damage ,and it was gutted.

I did'nt change anything and Mamed it.
Topped off with a custom marquee from emdkay [superb work btw!!!] this looks great!

I chose to Mame because it looked cool next to my original Stargate and Defender:)

Tutankham.com has a good tutorial on stencilling and painting. I believe stargate is the machine he uses in the stencilling tutorial.

Oh yes, great tutorial.  Unfortunately, I don't think that I will have a decent image left to work with when I pull off the formica...

Sideart for startgate is on the vector library, so you can easily print it up and make stencils from that.  That is what I'd do if I were restoring that game.  Or, if you have a good connection, you could just print the entire sideart and glue it on, but that wouldn't be as good as painting it on.

I always watch e-bay arcade cabinets and put in an advance search for items within 200 miles of my zip.  Every once in a while, someone will post a local pickup only and not know exactly what they have.  I have picked up a Frogger, Robotron, and now Stargate for under $100.  You have to be patient...
There are other ways also, but this one works for me...

Here's an update, maybe it will be done next weekend!  Side art from Arcadeshop Amusements.  (Yes I know the color is wrong in the front, but it looks a ton better 8)

Formica stinks. The cabs I have pulled formica off of usually have intentional deep gouges in the artwork to make the formica stick better. So not only do you have to repaint, but you have to sand the sides like crazy.

My Mini-Golf is a Pac conversion. Under the formica, it looked as though someone took a heavy screwdriver to the sides.

Good luck, and happy sanding!

The formica peeled right off!  I had to use a glue stripper which was much easier than sanding it.  I then used Minwax heady duty wood filler on the problem spots.  Mostly on the bottom.  I also had to glue and screw the cabinet back together in a few spots.  Now it is as solid as a tank!

I would have put the repro art over the formica myself. But it is looking good, really good. I would still go with a Multiwilliams board if I were you, at least if you don't already have a Stargate boardset. You could always just turn off everything other than Stargate and Defender.

I know where I can get a fully functional Atari Championship Srint cab for $100. I am just wondering if I will be able to use the monitor. The control panel, pcb, pedals I dont plan on using. I will buy the cab if I can use the monitor.

Sorry no multi-williams.  It is going to Mame and I am building a second control panel that I can swap out from time to time.  It will have 2 joys and 6 buttons for each.  I did this on my Robotron cab and it turned out great!

The monitor is medium res, which is the single most difficult monitor to use with mame (and EVERYTHING will be running the wrong resolution even if you do get it to work). You essentially couldn't pick a worse cabinet for Mame if you tried.
