one thing i don';t understand (well,  a lot i don;t understand) is it possible to get the x-arcade joy to work with mame32 to select a game and load it?

assuming you want a serious answer.. i don't have the technical skills (yet) to build a joy and don't have the space for a cab (yet)

This is a guess because I'd rather build one but buying one would be cheaper if you don't have any of the tools. If you live in an apartment finding a place to do woodwork may be tough. And some people are just lazy, or don't have a lot of practice woking with wood, and don't want to build stuff.
Hey Baby, Have you ever met a Newbie with 38 pages of previous posts before? Do you Want to?

I just picked up 2 Pelican Universal Real Arcade joysticks.

They using OK buttons and joysticks, but I can't build one that will connect to an Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube for what I paid for this ($40).

It also very, very simple to switch the buttons over to better ones if I want.

Okay well think of it this way:  I dont have the tools, im in early highschool meaning I have no technical skills, and I live in a condo so I have no space.  Im still going to build one!  If you try, you can!

You can control all of your MAME/MAME32 functions with your X-Arcade easily. Just go into the MAME32 options and click the select games with controller option. Then go into the MAME setup and set up some menu shortcuts using buttons or combinations of buttons. Bingo. Although I would trade that solo for a dual unit... just to be able to play dual stick games.  ;D

As for the no technical skills/condo/highschool/whatever excuses, don't think that way. Get into a shop class and boom. Tools, skills and hell, probably a good grade can be yours for building a arcade stick. Or get a cheap/dead console stick and use it as your housing, just replace the guts/controls. As form space, heck,  I converted 2 old dead arcade machines into a MAME cab in the living room of my townhouse. And I have very little "tech" skill... I just decided it was gonna work!! If I can do it, anyone can.  ;D

Don't sell yourself short cuz you're young (though I bet you probably hear it all the time "you're too young for _____")

Hooking up a joystick and buttons is about as complicated as taking a battery and hooking up a lightbulb to it. (hint: there are only two ends to a battery, only two contact points to a light bulb and all you need are two wires).

Pay attention in general science class.... ;-) It's not as pointless as it seems.
