Act-Labs EVER going to release new PC Gun?
« on: February 14, 2005, 04:15:16 pm »
Just wondering if I should keep waiting, or pay top dollar for one on ebay. Surely the next model(if there ever will be one) will be better and ultimately cheaper than the model you have to get from individuals on ebay. I've been on their 'wishlist' for 6 months and haven't heard a thing.

Anybody got some insiders info?!

I would personally wait... not for act labs but there is a possible new one... and it will have true tracking so it will work on t2 and other games...  (the xbox one that hopefully they are porting to the pc... both usb)

but they are ok, not great.  They loose shots and aren't really all that good.  I have one that I took apart to try and hack into a real arcade gun... but haven't been inclinded to continue... thinking about puting it back together and throwing it up on ebay though :)

Is there a website for the gun you're talking about? I've got all these lightgun games just begging me to play, but using the joystick as a gun just isn't the same ;-)

Does anyone know why Act-Labs discontinued their USB PC gun?
Seems a strange thing to do, they must have spent a lot of time and money developing it, why dump it?
There must be some reason but I can't think of one. Maybe some kind of legal issue? Don't know.

I doubt it was a legal issue, but I don't have any hard data.  I know they were very careful to go for the "Space Gun" look b/c there first stab at this came out about the same time as the Columbine shootings in Colorado.  And they also discontinued their pedals and a lot of their race wheels at the same time, so I suspect it was more financial than legal.

I wish they'd come back or release the new product, though.

I think its the same reason that Oscar discontinued the restrictor plates.

They only make sense making runs of a certain number of items.  And you sell a ton in the first few months... Then the number of sales go down... And at this point... if they made more... it would take longer then they feel its worth to move them all.

and their solution wasn't really all that good.  Best out there... but not great.  My dreamcast guns work 1000% better.

Is it because it only has to work at one resolution or because the 15hz is easier to pickup then the 30?    Because one of the current not so good ones only work at 640x480.  I would be happy with this if it really did work well at the one resolution (one refresh whatever)... But nothing worse that the one missed shot in some games.

http://www.erealgames.com/

looks promising...  They aren't light guns in the traditional sense... which is what I like....

The question is if we will be able to hack them.. And if they will be able to get a second gun...

They also reply to emails.. I sent them an email a bit ago with details of what we (as cab owners) would like to see.  And he had a great reply back talking about what they are hoping to get working.  He had never used MAME and said they would take a look before releasing a pc version.
