4-player control panel layouts
« on: October 23, 2002, 02:15:00 pm »
Anybody know the dimensions on some 4 player control panels?

I've got a few designs I've been working on, mostly with two players with 7 buttons (standard 6 plus extra for a row of four ala neo-geo), and two more with just 2/3 buttons.  I'm trying to get a feel for spacing, and was hoping to get some comparisons on dimensions.

Also, anyone know of 4-player games that need more than 2 buttons per player?

Thanks,
Ryan

I converted a 4-player TMNT into a MAME machine.. The CP size is 37"x14".  Not all of that is usable for controls due to the "box" underneath.  If I remember correctly, I had to have 1" clearance on the sides, 2.5" on the bottom, and 1" on the top.  Hope that helps.

4players need 4 buttons each.

btw, if you are making your own, you will find that the cp size really depends on what you want.  If you are only going to use your 4player cp for 4player games, and switch it for others, it's pretty easy... just pick one (like look at klov for gauntlet or d&d and copy it.

But most of them you can't use the joysticks for total carnage.  This was important to me.... didn't work well for 4player games for me (to crunched) but GREAT for Total Carnage.... I've ripped mine apart and going to redo it...

If this will be your one and only cp I would recommend the middle 2 with 6 buttons setup for SF games... and the two from the sides at an angle... but then TC and smashtv dont' work.  But it seemed to be the best solution

old post, but n00bs bring new freshness to all and experience resolves old issues.

how bout uncleT's CP design, its 4player and though still with the outer players at a slant, doesnt appear as slanted as other cp layouts...  would that work acceptably for total carnage and smashTV?
Four Player "T" configuration ???

The 'issue' with SmashTV/Total Carnage is that as they use two 8-way joysticks for each player, and most 4 player CP have the outer joysticks (for players 3 and 4 ) rotated at a 45 degree angle. So the direction 'up' on the outer joysticks is different to 'up' on the inner joysticks - this makes it very hard to player these dual joystick games.

It looks like UncleT's 4 player layout has all joysticks the same orientation (I could be wrong) so there is only an alignment difference. I imagine that this would be fine for smash tv et al, as its simply 1 hand higher up the CP than the other, but 'up' is the same for both CP's.
