Joystick Dilemma!!
« on: October 23, 2002, 12:23:19 am »
ok, i placed an order from happ awhile ago (bezel, t-mold, marquee retain, and one Ultimate JS) i only ordered one to ensure it wasnt a piece of crap. now im looking at the Competition and Supers. im completely stumped on the final choice, ive read alot of reviews and its making me lean towards the Competition since it seems to be the choice for fighting games (mk, street fighter, etc. etc.) the games im mainly going to play are fighters and brawl type games. i also want DECENT 4-way playability for the classics. which JS is gonna best for pulling off those half circle and quarter cirlce fireballs? but will i still be able to play pacman and donkey kong? please drop me some feedback to help my decision.

Ok, if you're willing to do a tiny bit of modification to the actuators on the push switches, I would HIGHLY suggest buying a super joytick.  What you do is take a small needle nose pair of pliers and bend the little actuators just a bit farther out, and it will make it a load more sensitive, so not only will you get that round circle feeling that makes Supers so good, you'll also get the sensitive diagonals that Competitions are so known for.
If you're really ansy to play 8-way and 4-way games on the same stick, I'd say do what I said before, but also get one of these, http://www.oscarcontrols.com/index_joystick.htm   I've heard they are realllly easy to get off and on, and feel just like the real 4-way joysticks when the restrictors on.

I believe ultimates and competitions are almost the same.  very good for diagnols - both 4 and 8 way games.

Supers - sure, you can mod them... but sooner or later those cheesy fimbsy metal switches will get out of whack causing horrid diagnols, and control issues.   Also, if you bend the levers to far... they are forever broken as they dont bend back.

Supers do have that round circular feel... but to me, I dont care about that.  I like the box feel, because I know when Im at the limits of the switches... and I know that its going to be 100% accurate all the time.  Not to mention that supers are a lot harder to push arround (more tention), and cause hand/wrist fatigue much faster.

Just my opinions... and notices within the time I worked in an arcade.
