Optipac Lag
« on: February 05, 2005, 05:56:50 pm »
I found several threads here that mentioned a lag using an Optipac.  Currently I'm using an Oscar spinner and Oscar USB mouse adapter.  Playing Arkanoid and trying it in Centipede yields no lag.  Those were two games mentioned with bad lag.  I'm using Mame32 .91u2.

If I have my USB analog joystick plugged in at the same time I experience all kinds of problems.  Games are not playable with the spinner.  The spinner continues to work fine in Windows though.  Thus there appears to be a Mame problem with multiple analog controls plugged in at the same time or an issue with my stick.  Maybe the problems experienced by others were caused by similar problems.

I'm considering getting an Optipac for a future project, but if there is a lag problem related to the board I'll stay away from it.  For those that have one, do you experience lag with your optipac with no other analog controls attached or are you running fine?

I had a problem like this the other day... only i was playing with a mouse instead.  I don't know what the exact problem is, but what got it working for me was disabling joystick input for spinner and trackball games. Dunno if there is a better way or not, because i didn't really care much for screwing around with it at the time.

Anyway, good luck on getting it working if that wasn't the prob.

Having an analog joystick enabled in MAME32 causes lag or sticking with the keyboard controls as well as the mouse controls (Eg Optipac). This is a long-standing problem with Mame32 and it is mentioned on my site in the troubleshooting section for the I-PAC. I'll add it to the Opti-PAC as well.

Just thought I'd mention that plugging an OptiPac (USB mode) or some USB mice into some USB2 hubs can cause serious problems.  This happened to me and caused some fairly simple games to run at ~5fps (on a 2.8gig P4) when operating the spinner/trackball.

So if you're using a hub make sure it is a USB1.1 one.
