Question about Kick-Harnesses

Now, it's obvious that a kick harness for Mortal Kombat, and a Kick Harness for Tekken will be totally different, but what I am curious about is the "street fighter" type games, like Killer instinct.

Are those kick harnesses interchangable?  Sorry, Im kinda new to working on an arcade cab.  I've had one before, but never messed with it as it was a NeoGeo, and i just swapped carts.

Generally, kick harnesses are different for every game except those in the same family like Street Fighter 2.  Killer instinct is made by a different manufacturer than Street Fighter 2 so I'd expect that the harnesses are different.

The reason is that the manufacturers can use different pinouts and connectors where the harness connects to the game board.

However, you can make a single custom kick harness with adapters for each of your boards that will make swapping boards much easier.

It is a pain in the ass unless they are from the same family (i.e. SFII).  I was going to do a multi-mortal kombat setup, but the harness from MK1-2 are different than MK3-4.  Pain in the ass to swap them out, so I was going to go with an all in one setup, but just having them connected would confilict with MK1 causing a  short.  Your best bet is to buy a cheap computer and a JPAC and just MAME it.  Save money on the PCBs anyway...

They're called 'kick' harnesses because they fall outside the JAMMA standard.

The JAMMA standard calls for three buttons per player.  Since Street Fighter II has six buttons, and the three JAMMA buttons were taken up for the three punch buttons, there had to be a breakout harness for the 'kick' buttons.  Hence, the name 'kick' harness came into play.

The term stuck, now it's used for buttons outside the standard.

krick:  I figured as much about the manufacturer thing. thanks.

XtraSmiley: Actually, that's what I plan to do for most of the games I plan on playing, but since I will be building a 'low end' pc (no better than a 1.7gHz CPU and about 256mb of RAM) it wouldn't be able to run Killer Instinct 1 at full speed (constantly) or Killer Instinct 2 at all. So I am buying those two boards at least.  I have Street Fighter EX 2 at the moment, so I was hoping to just swap out the kick harness as well, but I guess that's moot.

Peale:  thanks buddy.  I knew that much at least, but thanks for taking the time to explain it, just in case.   ;D
